I had a carrera virtuoso a few years back, it was a good bike for the money but a bit heavy though.

At that budget to get anything half decent I'd go to ebay and buy a good used bike.

Perhaps not the most fashionable but good kit for the money.

Trek 1200 Aluminium Series Road Bicycle 56cm Bike Racer on eBay Bikes, Cycling, Sporting Goods (item 180138279352, end time 22-Jul-07 21:15:00 BST)

Ribble Road Bike on eBay Bikes, Cycling, Sporting Goods (item 180141632167, end time 26-Jul-07 16:19:20 BST)

Just a couple from a quick 'buy it now' search.

Around 6months ago, i bagged a decathlon bargain Sport 7.2 for £130 they have a big sale on at the moment too
For the money the spec is awesome, Sora shifters are around £80 alone IIRC only plan is really some carbon forks and a decent chainring/cranks/bb setup, these are the only heavy steel bits. Other than that It does me for 100miles a week, and a 41.6 Mph top speed

Your gonna really struggle to get a decent road bike for around the £250 mark brand new, it'll be a cheap **** far east special with a heavy steel frame and sh1te components.

Ebays gonna be your best bet but even then second hand bikes of decent quality end up going for £400+
