Default HELP - TOM TOM

Connected my Tom Tom to the PC and it said there was a update - would I like to update - I said yes.

Now it's just showing an image on the Tom Tom of a map card coming out and a big red X marking across it!!

I need it Saturday Why didn't I just leave it alone

You should have done a back-up prior to any update, then you could simply restore. Try a fresh restore from the install disc provided. Not done it but I'm sure it's fixable.

Cheers - I tried to do a Back-Up and got the message that some file was missing.

Then I said update without doing a Back-Up and it started updating - but stopped with the message:-

Could not open destination file "I:\system" for writing

Now it appears to be completely fooooked

Why can't anything be simple??

Pete,

There is a reset button (small hole) where the tomtom connects to the cradle. It's a very small hole so you will need a paper clip etc. Worked on mine when it locked up.

Regards Red.

The picture of a card coming out and a big 'X' means "don't take the card out during the update, 'cos it'll stuff it". It shows that during the copying process.

Did you take the card out Pete ?

If the TomTom is attached to your system as the 'I' drive then the later message mean it can't write to it... is the card still in there ?

Just like oil changes there is a proper procedure for doing these updates

If it has a software error........ finding someone with the same unit as you and getting a copy of the file that is missing in yours might be a possible solution...not sure all the files are tranferable.....but some of the smaller ones certainly are as they are not unit specific so dont need a licence code......

Cheers all - the SD Card remained inside the Tom Tom ..... infact it has to (I have taped it in, stupid how it was able to pop out before!)

I've held the RESET button in for 15 seconds, removed ALL the TomTom stuff from my PC, re-booted the PC, re-installed off the CD ........ now, when I try to run the TomTom program it comes up with an error and says run a chkdsk utility

I'm guessing that something, somewhere is completely messed up are there any patches for the TomTom that I need? Anyone know?

I'm now at my wits end

dont know what sort 'card' u have in yr tomtom - but if its is anything like an SD card, there is a little plastic tag on the side for locking/unlocking the card (like floppy disks used to have!). If u want to write to the card make sure tag is in 'unlocked' setting

The basic error is that the TomTom is telling me that an application is not installed on the SD-card.

So, I try an re-load the latest version online (even the old one off the CD) but all kinds of problems happen!!

It just will not behave

Pete, give them a call. Although you have to hold for a while they're pretty good. Mine broke, they talked me through what I had to do to fix it (emailed me a file) and when that didn't work they sent me a box to return it to them in- had it back a couple of days later. Unfortunately it did the same thing again so they sent me a new one.

They're rather helpful on the whole.

have you tried putting the SD card directly into your pc to check if there is any data on the SD?

Sounds like you coruppted the SD, run a chkdsk on it

OK, thanks all - will ring them tomorrow.

I have back-ups of the TomTom on my PC .... why can I not just transfer the back-up files to the SD?

I think I have a corrupted SD I cannot put it into my PC and have no SD Camera or other such thing to re-format it

How do I run a chkdsk on the SD if I cannot plug it into my PC?

Pete I have a pda that used to run tomtom but after not charging it for a few days it wiped the memory - and as I dont always pay attention to where I store discs - I cant find my tomtom installation cd.

If you get really stuck I am sure we can come to some arrangement on the pda.

If you need it urgently for the weekend, you can borrow this one, install the software (I have all the bits for it, sattelite receiver etc in car charger bla bla).

TomTom have told me to Re-Format the SD Card.

Reload the application.

If it doesn't work send the SD Card off for repair - would have thought they could just send me another, while I send mine back to them?
