Default Cheque clearing??

Here is a short story....

Sold my car a month ago.The guy came to view and was happy,he wrote a cheque there and then and we put it in the bank on the following Monday morning.
He then called and said that he could raise the cash(as he wanted car asap). He said he would stop the cheque, come over with the cash and all would be fine..
It was,he came, paid in cash and drove the car off..

All ok...

Its now 4 weeks later and the cheque has cleared 3 weeks ago and the money is still in our account.
I contacted the guy and he said the cheque had been stopped successfully and money had not left his account!!!

Any suggestions??

Keep it in your account for 6 months... after that it is all yours... as far as I am aware... or do the sensible thing and contact your bank....

contact the bank, there is an auditable trace for all these kind of transactions and they will be in contact sooner or later!

you could ring him again saying that your bank had made a mistake and did not cancel the cheque therefore he paid for the car twice so you could either meet up with the cash or you can create a bank transfer to put the money back into his bank account.

your best doing the honest thing

Blimey, there's being honest and there's being stupid. DON'T under any circumstances meet the guy and give him cash FFS, you might just end up losing the cash AND then the bank remove 'their' money. Chances are, sooner or later you will get a call for the money, so it's up to you if you spend it now.

Tell your bank, let the 2 banks sort it, not you.

Close your account, when you close take the payment as cash. Go somewhere else and open up an account.

That will make it harder for them to get the money back

I would just leave the money in the account and say nothing,do some reserch and see if there is a time limit on the money becoming legally yours, you never know.JAY

Hmmm,

We did tell the bank what was going to happen. They said,ok,the cheque will enter into your account for about 7 days then it will get withdrawn. We just thought it would go in/out in a matter of hours..

1 month later tho...

put it into a high interest savings account, if they take it back at least you have made the money work for you for a period of time
