Default Paying stamp duty

Once someone purchases a property (once the keys are in there name)..

When does the taxman come asking for the stamp duty?

For my first purchase, my solicitor asked me for a cheque to cover the stamp duty. When we sold flat, bought house, the solicitor subtracted it out of the balance left which was then wired to us.

the money is paid across to the taxman before you take possesion of the keys.

I don't think the land registry can register a transfer without the duty or some acceptable alternative (like a proper claim for relief).
