We've got an X reg Vauxhall Astra which has done really well over the last 6 years of ownership. Surely you can get one of those. Very comfortable for long trips.

Oh, it's not for sale... Unless I can persuade the old man to buy me a new car now my Clio's gone! It's got 130K miles too.... It's an SRi, 35-40 mpg.

Passat will be expensive and have high mileage for that sort of price. Focus would be comparable, my mate's got a W reg one which is a diesel and it does her OK. Mid-sized car will be better - comfy, but not too thirsty.
