Default Sky HD question for a techie....

I've got a Pioneer 506XDE, 1280x768 resolution - i.e. 720p native, but accepts 1080i and downscales.

Just subscribed to Sky HD (should be coming next week)... been reading lots about which setting to use on the Sky HD box - I understand Sky HD is broadcast in 1080i, with the option to output in 720p/1080i/auto.... most people seem to say leave it at 1080i and let the TV do the scaling.

I'd like my TV to do the scaling, as I think it'll do a better job.... however, will it scale it to 720i ??? or 720p ??? i.e. what's the best way to get the highest resolution, without adding too much distortion/softening from the scaling process?

Second question: for SD content, if I set the Sky box to 1080i, will it upscale to this, then my TV downscale to 720p? Sounds like a mess - maybe I should set to auto?

Cheers

645.

I have mine set to 1080i , Always have done , You could try the 2 different settings and see which you prefer.

PS SD stuff looks almost as good

Sky HD's native resolution is 1080i - you can set it to 720p and the box will scale it to that before outputting to the TV.

Originally had mine set at 720p but after reading a few threads on AV Forums it seems 1080i is the better choice, as aparently 1080i gives better images for SD stuff as well as the tv guide.

Personally, I can't tell much of a difference.

I'd leave it on 1080i

on 1080i the sky box is outputing 1920x1080, and on 720P the skybox will output 1280x720.

The reason being that as your TV is 1280x768 which is better on the vertical axis than 720P,
therefore on 1080i, the tv will downscale to 1280x768, but
with the skybox set to 720P, then the skybox will downscale to 1280x720, and then your TV will have to upscale the vertical axis from 720 lines to 768 lines meaning loss of detail.

Yes, leave it on 1080i - but the above WON'T happen...

If you have it set to 720p then your TV will display 1280x720 (it won't do any messing about to upscale to x768!!). 24 pixels at the top and bottom will remain black, that's all...

The only reason your TV is 1280x768 and not 1280x720 (which is the 720p resolution) is to allow you to natively use the PC resolution of 1024x768
