Default (BBC website) Weather forecasts really bad these days

Anyone notice that the weather forecasts recently have been really inaccurrate.

For instance, now is it blue skies everywhere over Purley & Croydon. Guess what the beebs weather reckons it is? Yup, black clouds and pi$$sing it down like a goodun.

Hey, at least I can get the westie out for a little run tonight

Try living north of Watford. The Beeb and the other channels only seem to want to predict for the south east of the UK. Oh and Scotland and Northern Orlind, (according to that daft Scotch bitch that does the forecasts in the morning). Nowhere else matters, you see

And the Metoffice are even worse.

They predict sunshine. It rains. When you look at their site again, the barstewards have changed it to "rain".

They should be fined when they get it wrong.

Ha ha - was thinking just the same this morning, as sunny spells / cloud forecast, when in actual fact it was hammering it down.... If they can't do this down to postcode accuracy (which they evidently can't), why bother offering it???

See HERE and THERE for like-minded souls...

They always seem to be very conservative these days, rain, high winds, snow, etc. for fear of being sued I suppose

Blame the unpredictability of weather on global warming, er...no sorry its now called "climate change". Strange now that the government/green lefties changed to a more ambiguous term. Maybe the powers that be realise that the term "global warming" is not a good term to use when the earth eventually cools and therefore may have a limited "shelf life" when it comes to extorting tax.

They get their data from the Met Office, but the forecast is their own. The Met Office forecast is often different (and wrong too!)

Weather forecasting seems to have gone a bit awry with the advent of more powerful computers! Makes you wonder.

The meteorologists at the BBC all work for the Met Office and have done since the partnership around weather was started. So the main weather updates on national TV are by Met Office employees.

The BBC website uses data directly from the Met Office updates with no intervention. It loads the data automatically into graphical representation.

So how come the forecasts are often different when you check both sites?

For example: Wed 20th June, Met office says max temp in Swindon will be 18DegC, whereas BBC says it'll be 20DegC. Ok only a difference of 2 but how so if the data and forecasters are the same?

Wind the most important thing to me (and all other surfers) so use either GB Wind Map or WindGURU: Weather forecasts for windsurfing, kitesurfing and other wind related sports

Far better than the beeb.
The internet has revolutionised surf forecasting beyond belief. Shame it doesn't improve the actual surf though!

Whatever the BBC says it will do the opposite. Terrible forecasts from them.

Forecasting has got so bad these days

Being a fair weather biker and checking them out frequently, I reckon that Metcheck.com - Global Weather Forecasts - Weather Feeds - Live Data - Long Range Weather Forecasts is the best of the bunch - more accurate more of the time.....

From the BBC

"The Met Office provide automatic feeds to BBC servers at different times of the day every day of the year, including Christmas and New Year.

The main data files arrive by 8pm each evening with forecast data for next 24 hours, the following day and for four days after that. The files arrive as CSV (Comma Separated Values) files which BBC Servers interpret and then convert to the graphical representation you see on the site. These files are uploaded to the website by 10pm.

It is important to note that the Met Office's NEC computers based at Exeter automatically produce the data. This data is not quality controlled before reaching the website - i.e. there is no manual intervention to check the data before being issued to the BBC.

This is different to the forecasts seen on TV. A Broadcast Meteorologist monitors, and where appropriate changes, the data used on television forecasts to illustrate the most accurate forecast as issued by the Chief Meteorologist in Exeter."

I suspect the difference is that the Met office will update theirs more regularly than the once a day on the BBC.

Well if the BBC forecaster are Metoffice employees, they ought to be ashamed. Last summer, one of the daft bints on there actually said that the higher than average tides were due to "the summer equinox", and she meant solstice.

God, I LOATHE that Carol Kirkwood. Every time I hear the silly biatch talking about a "wee" bit of rain, (Wee is p*ss, you silly bitch), or "Northern Orlind" I just want to smack her.

The thing you need to understand is that the forecast has to take into account a fairly broad region which localised geography and other topographical objects can affect.

I was out walking yesterday evening (roughly six miles south of you) about the time you posted this and it was generally clear skies but after half an hour we got caught in a very brief cloud burst.

Taking the site now it is accurate for this area:

BBC - bbc.co.uk homepage - Home of the BBC on the Internet cloud and sun - probably 4/8s coverage.

Two hours ago, it was fine and sunny so then it was incorrect.

The point is that its a fairly large brush stroke they're covering. If you really want accurate forecasting then look at the Met Office site under aviation and check out the TAFs and METARS. The nearest one to you would probably be Biggin Hill.
