Default Time taken to swap a private plate ?

I have a private plate on my car. Want to put it on retention and buy another private plate for it.
So I guess I need to fill out the retention paperwork & buy the new plate, but any idea how long this process all takes and if there is any way it can be speeded up.
Do I have to wait for the plate to go on retention and a "normal" number is assigned before I can purchase the other private plate ?

Cheers

R.

I've done this recently. You can buy your new plate at any time, I bought mine directly from the DVLA and the paperwork appeared on my doorstep within the week. I then sent the transfer paperwork through to my local DVLA office and again in about a weeks time had notification back I could swap the plates. It will depend on how busy your local office is. You can send your retention and transfer paperwork together, shouldn't take any longer!

It did take much longer for the V5 log book to come back, around 4 weeks I think but this doesn't stop you changing your plates. Remember to notify your insurance!
