New TV Advice...
Looking to upgrade my 32" Philips HD LCD to something bigger - either 42 or 46" I think. I'd love a 50" but think it'll be a bit big for the wall it's going on
Anyone got any advice before I go round the normal shops to look at them all...

1. Get this months what hi-fi sound and vision. Devoted to HDTV's.
2. Pricematching and warrenties. John Lewis and Panasonic stores both give 5 year warrenties as standard. JL will also price match with Empire direct stores so before you rush out to Currys and buy the latest spend a few hours on the phone and the net.
I'm after a Panny 26inch LCD for the bedroom. £599 in Currys.£163 for 3 yr warrenty. I can get it for £569 incl 5 yr warrenty from either Panasonic in Sheffield or the nearest JL store. Thats without haggling, only pricematching. I'd then haggle for a good scart.
3. Trust your instincts. If you think the picture is better then go for it.
Finally i'd say now is a great time to enter the flat screen market, prices have never been so competative.

Patt,
I did months of research into my new set, it's a Sharp 42" XD1EA, there have been some issues with banding and buzzing on the 46 and 52, (42 the odd one), but I think as a rule these have been sorted out, you can spend days on the AV forums, everyone has their own preference, I was very worried about spending over a grand and getting a set which was either a lemon or did not do all I expected.
Anyway to my review of it.
Its' 1080p with 2 HDMI , although it will only do upto 1080i over the other 3 connection types.
SD tv via a scart box is better than my old Toshiba 100hz CRT (on most channels),
DVD via my upscaling DVD player is 95% HD quality !!!! amazing,
and games via PS3 (only boorrowed) is nothing short of spectacular !!.
My best advice is to look at the top sets Sharp, Sony, Samsung and Panny, (1080p I think is a must now), pick one you like the look of, make sure it has all you need, get an extended warranty and go for it.
don't be scared to go BIG, but don't go too big or you will notice the imperfections in LCD/Plasma with poor content.
Online retailers are you best bet (just pick a good one), for price,
Any more info on my purchase just ask me..

I went into Sevenoaks today and saw a picture that was probably the best i've ever seen. SkyHD on a Samsung, but the thing that did it was the tv was full 1080. Dont even think about anything thats not 1080 resolution.

Paul, what size was the 1080p TV? I've heard you will only appreciate the difference in 1080p vs 1080 at 50inches and short viewing distances
1080p screens (in plasma anyway) are much more expensive than 1080 ones. The only 1080p plasma at the mo is a Pioneer 5000 at approx £6k!

I presume you mean 1080p when you say full 1080? Did you view a 1080 against a 1080p on the same feed to make a true comparison?

I searched the AV forums and read all the reviews. It was hard to view the chosen ones in the shops because they were generall poorly set up and it takes a while to get them right. I felt that any 1080I/P telly fed with a HD signal looked fab so it's more important to check the SD performance etc.
I went for something I'd never considered before - Tosh Regza 37. I've had a Philips and this blows it into the weeds. Check out the 42 version, it's great value for money

Stephen,
Same as you've found - it doesn't seem to be 1080p from what the net says...
Last month my nan and grandad asked me to choose a new tv for them, just realised it was the 42PC56 they went for, that is awesome
