Work colleague being rather under-hand. What would you do?

Work colleague being rather under-hand. What would you do?
To cut a long story short.
A work colleague has gone for a Line Manager job. His interview was last week. There were 5 applicants (3 of which were internal applicants).
Prior to the interview, to say he was coy would be an understatement. He spent most of the day reading up on the job and all that it entails (a good idea), however, at MAJOR expense to his work.
There is nobody above him at present to check on his work, hence the reason for his actions.
I had a phone call at the weekend from him. I couldn't take it, but a message was left on the answer machine from his wife, saying that his father had been taken ill and was on death's bed.....
I've said, in anybody in authority's absence, to take the week off on compassionate leave. This does seriously drop me in the **** as we've got some important audits due in the next 2 weeks that need to be completed on top of our regular work. There is nobody else to help me out either.
I have no issue doing the extra work if it's a cosha reason. And this is where I start having doubts.
Speaking to one of the secretaries, it would seem that the Line Manager job has been shortlisted down to 3 candidates...... all internal.
Due to this type of subterfuge occurring before, I find it a little bit convenient that this chap "suddenly" has a compassionate leave.......
My thoughts are that he's said "*** the job I'm in - screw the work. I'm going to concentrate on this Line Manager job" And he's going to use this compassionate leave to "bone up" even more......
Not really the sort of person you want as a Line Manager (if you ask me).....
The boss is aware, as is the HR department, that he is off.
But I've got a horrible feeling that this escapade is going to work for him.
Obviously, I *could* be wrong, and if that's the case, I'll be the first offer my apologies and condolences.
BUT, the chap has done this type of stunt before.....
What would you lot do?

LOL - sorry started short and just ended up as a "venting"!!
I'm by no means upset that I didn't go for the job. I really wouldn't want the job, as it seems like a thankless task for very little extra money.
I do have doubts as to whether he would be any good at the job, but that's for him to find out subject to him being successful.
What's disturbing is how this chap could be shafting his work colleagues to get a leg up. Doesn't seem right to me. Perhaps I'm too much of a simpleton, and to get ahead in your career this is what you've got to do.
However, in all of my jobs, I've got to be pretty successful without having to resort to these type of antics.
Surely, you'd get more help from your colleagues by being a bit up front...... You'd certainly get more respect from them if you do get the job....

I to am to stupid and naive to be underhand in my career path which is probably why I will never make it to far up the food chain.

Although wasting a few hours of the working day on SN is a great start to the 'dark path' leading toward upper management

LOL @ the Dogbert stuff
I knew if I vented on here, I would feel better about it - they say a problem shared....
One thing's for sure, I'll be VERY careful around this chap even if he doesn't get it. There's certainly no trust there anymore. Shame really.
Respect-wise, of course, I'd do the job as required, but when helping people out, if you respect them, you'd probably do an awful lot more to help them.....
I know there's loads of bosses I've worked for that because I respected them, I'd go above and beyond to help them out. On the flipside, there's a few I wouldn't p1ss on if they were on fire....

If he is lying there is a good chance he'll trip up on a lie of that magnitude and reveal his character for what it is. If he's done it before, don't be surprised if the relevant people are already well aware of this antics.
If he isnt; then condolences are due!
Concern yourself with your own work and you'll do yourself much more credit that way! You can look at this as an opportunity to demonstrate just how good you are at your job.

If he gets the job then so be it, if hes is the best person then perhaps he will do a great job, if not he may end up on his ****, if he needs this time to gen up then chances are it is beyond him.
If you complain or mention anything then it can and usually does sound like sour grapes on your part unless it is someone well placed in your organiseation and who you know very well.
What goes around often come around.
