Default Firemen could be sacked for sleeping in wrong place...

Beggars belief. See here

They also have to read a 4 page document before being allowed to use a reclining chair FFS.

Are they meant to sleep on nightshift? It sounds as if they aren't, hence the special chairs to 'rest in'....

Where's firesorter when you need him?? ....... probably asleep on some floor

I am so glad our council tax goes to pay for all this. All those inspectors, the people who wrote the health and safety manual, the cost of the manual, and now all the legal begals taking this thing further. So nice to see we have so much spare cash...

Beggars belief that they get paid for sleeping at all Their pay should be on a call out basis and the fee variant on the type of call out they go to...
So an 8 hour shift could be:
3 hours sleeping £0.00
1 hour to get to and save cat up tree £6.00
1 hour installing smoke alarms in old peoples houses £5.85
3 hours attending warehouse fire, lots of explosive gas bottles, mad members of the public trying to get in to save the company budgie £100...

Vote for me... Andy Gilchrist wouldnt know what had hit him... Existing firecrew strike at the sound of Abdabz proposals, Abdabz sacks them and employs from the waiting lists of thousands! Sorted...

I agree that when they actually DO something they should get paid a good rate for doing it.

All the hours upon hours upon hours where they do nothing except run their other businesses is paid for by US and I, for one, am truly pissed off with their moaning about it!!

These people work a 15-hour night shift and they are entitled to take rest periods."
15 hour nightshift. Where are they? In the Arctic circle or something.

I was gonna give a sensible reply but I don't think I'll bother other than to say I and most of my colleagues on my watch don't have secondary employment and anyone who believes that we sit on our ***** all day waiting for a shout is living on another planet.

More than a British Army Private who has just returned from working 18 hour days for 6 months straight on an operational tour, only to be told that their leave is cancelled because a bunch of socialist, bone-idle, supposed public servants are too frigging lazy to do their job.

The reasons they are not liked are:-

1. Overpaid - WE pay them a staggering amount per hour they do anything

2. Have 2nd and 3rd buisnesses

3. Sit around playing pool and PS2 games

4. Attend FETEs and play with their dooodaaaaas WHILST WE ARE PAYING THEM!

5. **** all happens ....... EVER! Their main job is to visit old grannies telling them where to put smoke detectors - good worthwhile job, but ANYONE can do that for £6 an hour!

I have 2 mates who are Firemen, 1 is retained, 1 is full time ...... they have a right laugh. Have they attended any big stuff? Well, yes, the Ufton Nervet train crash and hats off to them. But, I have known them for 20 years + and thats the only call-out of note!

Starting salary for a trainee firefighter is £19,918. On achieving full competence, the rate for a firefighter is £26,548. There is also a London weighting allowance of £4,592 (salary data collected Sept 06).
