Engineer recons our Sony 28 CRT is dead, now what to replace with?
Long story short, dropped our trusty Sony 28" CRT, had it 10 years, it was top of the range with surround sound at the time we bought it.
The picture was still very good and the contrast, etc has hardly been turned up since we had it. We where very happy with the picture and sound...
Engineer the ins. co. sent out recons it is uneconomic to fix it so we need a new TV!
Assuming we will not except any tat the insurance co try to fob us off with what is the best 32" LCD or plasma out there for less that £950.00
Do not want bigger than 32"
What are the advantages/disadvantages - LCD vs. plasma.
I just want very good picture and sound out of our new TV to replace the old one

I'd like to know how you managed to insure a ten year old telly against failing and get £950 pay out for it! My insurance company would tell me to go take a running jump....
As for the LCD/Plasma debate it's really subjective and I found it's best to go and view as many as you can.

The insurance covered the TV when it was dropped, by accident, long stort short, two of us moving the room around, lifted the TV off its stand, dropped it, it hit the stand and landed on the screen on our wood floor. Not ideal!

Ah ha I see - thought you meant it had just died! (A case of RTFP...)
I bought an LCD a few months ago and am very happy with it but there are so many now especially for £1k and under that you really need to go and window shop to see what suits you.
I bought a Hyundai A321 @ £500 which I think is great but for what you have to spend I reckon you'd get a much better brand/model.
Spend 10 mins and download this guide to HDTV from a dl.tv

Sorry about the loss of the old one-we had one too and it really was a v good tv.
I would think that Plasma will still be the best picture. The LCD's response times are better now but the plasma is still better in that respect and also the number of colours and the more natural effect is better with a plasma. We have a 3 year old Sony plasma and the picture quality is excellent even though it is not HD. It is important to get a tv with Progressive scan rather than Interlaced for the very best quality picture.

Best 32" LCD is the Toshiba It wins all the awards/tests anyway in mags/websites etc. I have one and i haven't seen a better picture on an LCD of the same size.
Most 32" LCDs are well under £950 now. £500/600 is about the going rate, even for the Sony Bravias which used to be massively overpriced.
LCD uses less power if you care at all about your carbon footprint
