How does it make money?
Ryan air are selling tickets to various midweek destinations for 1pence each way. In some instances this includes taxes...
How does this work and what are they gaining...
Do tell all before I book a day trip to milan

They're running the planes so might as well run them full. Perhaps passenger number have an effect on the subsidies they get from regional airports? Don't know. They clearly think it's better to run some flights at a loss than to reduce the number of flights they run. Michael O'Leary's got a big head... cutting routes doesn't sit well with his plan for world dominance perhaps.

The flight plans are worth more than the cost of the fuel.
there are a number of companies running completely empty planes into heathrow just to protect the very expensive and in demand landing allocations.

Just got 3 tickets return to and from Dublin for £12.06 for a Monday in June...
I guess it makes sense to run them full rather than empty but just seems like madness to me as I would never ever ever fly with them again... So no return custom etc...

Quite simply they get money from the Government if they fly about with full planes, so lets just fill all the seats up. Uncle told me. He works for Areo Space.

Coz I'm not a city break kinda guy. Normally I like to drink in my local, fight and have burping competitions, rarely leaving my comfort zone of a pub to go anywhere except to get my head shaved and drive round in my Subaru growling at passers by. No other reason

Not sure about the landing slots argument though. They're worth money at heathrow but not at most airports.

Not sure about other airports but i guess if it is a "use it or lose it" type thing they keep them going so that they still have the best slots in busy periods.
here's the beeb story on ghost flights from earlier in the month.

It's definitely a thing at Heathrow, which is the busiest airport in Europe and arguably the world. But I don't think ryanair fly out of Heathrow, they need cheap or free use for their model to work.
I've a had a couple of poor experiences with low-cost airlines so I don't use them now.

Not all the seats on the plane are that price, book nearer the time and you pay a lot more.
I needed to get to Dublin urgently and booked 1 day in advance, cost was over £200

2p return for flights to Dublin. Problem is though its £10 per bag to check in so unless your going for the day its not as cheap as you think.
Suppose its still cheap really but not as it first makes out

Only if it's in my local where all my friends will be
It's really only good for a day trip because like someone pointed out once you start taking luggage, or forget to opt out of their travel insurance schemes it gets pricier.
Plus at weekends you can find the taxes sneaking back on there...
It works well for us though. land in dublin half 7 in the morn, wander round and look at the leprecauns (sp), look out for blarney stones and the corrs for a bit and anyone who was in Ballykissangel. Then lunch, guiness, tea, guiness, flight home 10.30ish
It would cost us more to get the bus to Bindipperland and that's only 10 miles away

If any Government is going to have any credability on green issues then they are going to have to tackle the air lines.
Running nearly empty planes and ghost flights to keep airport slots is a joke.
The airlines cause massive pollution and pay little carbon tax, other industries, manufacturing and the motorist are nailed to the wall in this country.
It's about time the costs / pollution balance was evened up.
Cheers
