Default Creaking radiators...new central heating system...

I had a new central heating system installed about 1 month ago...it is done using plastic piping...

The sytem works well in terms of heat, but two of the radiators in the bedrooms creak and squeak when on and it is soo annoying...what is the likely caise of this?

Im also worried that the sound may be that of dripping water but there is no sign of any leakage....

I would get the guy who installed it to come take a look, but he is hard to get hold of at the best of times, and it will take ages before he comes round and no doubt will tell me its just 'one of those things'......

So, please help!! I am going to bleed all the rads to see if this helps, but what else can I do t try fix it?

Sounds like an air lock. A bleed should sort it out.

When radiators are hung on their brackets a small plastic insert should be fitted so that when the radiator expands with the heat it slides smoothly on the bracket, if it is not fitted then the radiator will drag metal on metal making a noise.

Could it also be the pipes rubbing against joists/floorboards?

I had one in our last house, sounded like a moped under the floor

One day, I had the floorboard up to run an outside light, and it started. I was able to identify EXACTLY where the noise was coming from. I removed an extra 1/2 cm of joist, and it stopped.

Was that when you lived in that flat above the Piaggio main dealers?

I would agree normally but he has said plastic pipework and so it shouldn't drag on the joists.

If it is creaking when it is warming up/cooling down ,as people have said above its the pipes expanding and contracting and catching/touching on timber joists/floorboards. Even if it was done in plastic depending on how tight the notchs were it would still do it, plus if it was in 15mm they would have brought copper rad-legs to the rads so it could be on the floor boards. The favourite is to pull the boards back up and get some of the old type lagging and rap the pipes were they go over the jiosts .Other causes could be cheap thermostatic rad valves ,they are designed to be fitted on both ends but if they are fitted to the return you could get a ticking/hissing as the valve closes. Also if the rad is of very large size(2 metre+): and a single panel(k1) they can creak in the middle , this is usaly after fitting a combi to a old system not new rads.

The creaking should stop with use eventually-certainly after about 25 years anyway.

Thanks all for the replies (albeit a long time ago now!)

I took up the floorbaords, and it appears that the cowboy %^&***** 'plumber' who installed the system has left some of the pipes touching the joists, and touching the other pipe...

So, what is the correct set up for the piping? Should it not touch the joists and should it not touch the other pipe?.....should I simply cut more of th joist, or insert some sponge or something between the pipe and the joist?

Thanks in advance.

I think you should have just paid more up front and got a better quality system mate!!

Theres always a turboman post on here along the lines of "whats the cheapest" "I want to spend the least money possible" etc

LOL Pete, you've got me there!! Having said that, the guy was a 'proper plumber', and the system wasnt even remotely cheap once he'd fleeced me!!

I am a tight git when it comes to these things, but then I have to be as Im a young chap on a budget with a bloody big house to do up!
