Am I missing something - democratic process
I am confused as it would seem that in a few weeks time Gordon Brown is going to be Prime Minister.
How does that work? I don't remember voting for him and I am not sure who else does. Surely for the democratic process to be valid, if Blair stands down then he should declare a General Election.
Or am I missing something?

As Labour have the majority of MP's in the Houses of Parliament, they automatically have the right to select a new leader. Therefore, no General Election.
I don't think that Flash would stand a chance if he stood in a GE.
With Flash Gordon in the hot seat we are in for some pretty shocking times ahead. If you thought the last 10 years were bad, you ain't seen nothing yet.
I'm wondering whether to close my business now before Flash brings in policies that will bleed it, and me, to death!
F**k Labour.

It was the same way John Major became Prime Minister (although in that case it meant the end of Maggie so every cloud and all that ).
Seriously though in my book although technically we vote in a party and its manifesto a new leader can have a huge influence on a party's policies and direction and hence it doesn't seem right that a change of PM should be able to happen without a general election.

Was discussing this subject with a mate last night.... the upshot was that we both thought that in the event of the PM standing down then the government should be given time to elect a new party leader upon which a GE should then happen so that the public can then decide if they still want the current party to be in office.
I for one shudder at the thought of flash leading this country

pretty much every other public sector job has to be filled by Equal ops policies - advertised externally, mixed interview panel, same questions to everyone so no-one gets upset. It's ironic that the big cheif can walk in to a job becuse they want it, and their predecessor is ok with that.
I really hope the public sector remembers how Flash has screwed them over (2% payrise etc), and votes against them. They'll be screwed at the next election. Trouble is, people seem to have short memories for these things...

Blair & Brown are both a pair of tw*ts, but I'd rather Blair was in charge.
Rather him than Gordon (I want to heal the world with UK tax payers money) Brown.
Let us not forget, it was Brown that created the Pension fund crisis by robbing from it to pay for his budget.
