Question Radar and laser detectors illegal by the end of the year?

Does anybody know if this is definitely the case? Morpheous seem to think so.

Has the law actually been passed and we're just waiting for the start date?

I think the coppicemen are using non specific legislation at the moment. The actual specific ban has been mooted for 2 years now. Not sure what the current status is chap.

Thanks, WWSD. That's what i thought too - lots of talk about it but no specific legislation.

At the moment that's definitely the case, although if they were feeling particularly **** i'm sure they can still try and force it through on the grounds that you're not allowed to act upon the information gained from such devices, can't remember which offence they try and stick it on. Pretty sure they rarely if ever bother on that tack now.

Yes from what I understand the folks who have been prosecuted under the Wireless act (can't remember details) got off the charges. The laser/radar signal did not carry "information"

Also they could get you for perverting the course of justice.

That's the one. But wasn't there a case about six months ago where the prosecution failed, so the Police have effectively abandoned this approach, and are pushing for the overall ban instead?

There's mention of "Speed assessment equipment detection devices" in the Road safety Act - the act that recently made using a mobile phone while driving liable to points.

I'm not sure if that actually makes them illegal, or is just enabling legislation to allow them to be made illegal at some later date.

John.

Detectors are less of an issues, jammers OTOH will probably result in a PTCOJ or Interfering with an officer carrying out his duties charge.

Correct. Its the wording of the act for detectors that is the problem - it states that acting upon "information" contained in a police tranmission is against the law. The technical point is that the emission from a radar gun, for example, is an unmodulated signal, therefore, carries no information. Hence it is impossible to act upon information that doesn't exsist, and it is very difficult to legislate against passively detecting the presence of a signal, which is all a detector does. Even if they modulated the signal, as long as the detector has no ability to demodulate the signal, it still wouldn't be illeagal.

Jammers are technically illeagal though as they are effectively an unlicenced broadcast, are actively preventing a police officer in carrying out his duties, and more tentitively interrupting police communications/systems (not sure about the last one - but I'm sure they'd give it a go..).

So if they start to send coded messages to us by modulating the radar or laser transmissions, we are done for!

Only if you de-modulate them.

Morpheous - that'll be the guys that make GPS-based detectors, rather than ones that respond to radar or laser?

There's a clue in there somewhere

Traditional radar detectors - does anyone actually use these things anymore ??!!

having owned a few off the so called better ones over the years inc bell etc I personally found them impossible to live with with there almost constant false alerts ie. approcahing traffic lights etc, etc etc.......... !!!! to the extent that I ended up switching it off most days which is kinda defeating the object is it not ??!!

does anyone here still use a traditional radar / laser detector in there car ??

gone for the TomTom 1 v2 with the pocketsgps speed cam database installed, well chuffed with it and best off all no false alerts . well apart from the ones on the database !!!

I do, yeah. Along with Morpheous Geodesy. Yes you have to accept a certain amount of false alarms on the Bel but it's saved me from points on at least two occasions, maybe more.

Boomer yes i take your point, but Morpheous are capable of making traditional detectors, they just don't see it as the way forward. What baffles me is why their current GPS products are less sophisticated than their predecessors, seems like the current range is pretty basic in terms of functionality.

My road angel is the best of both, gps for fixed ones, and laser for guns. I've only ever had a false alert once, and that was my fault with my stereo remote. The other 2 times it went off it saved my licence, i would have lost it.

Are you saying it doesn't respond when you go near automatic opening doors like on supermarkets, petrol stations etc?
