Great company from an user's point of view - love my free G Mail, mobile mail, calendar, shared docs etc - and their search engine is clearly The Daddy.
That's a lot of dosh though - how do they make it and what do they charge so as your company name comes up first etc? Not much to be gleaned from Goggling this

Put it this way, the company I work for spends 6 figures every month with Google. At one time, Google traffic was responsible for about 60% of our income and we're a £100M company.

Serious spend! Is that for the ads on the right that try and key in to what you are searching for [and generally are for other search engines like Kelkoo, e-bay or anyone else who seem rarely to have what you are looking for!]

They are huge, majority of people going online must be exposed to some sort of google-owned site/product be in the search engine, google toolbar, youtube etc etc.
I'm surprised they haven't bought ebay yet!

They also have that new Google Checkout thing, same as Paypal, bound to take off and do well... Anything Google these days will make money! I have read that Ebay have banned the use of Google Checkout already!
Why would they buy Ebay? I'm sure if they really wanted to they could build there own auction system to give Ebay a bit of competition!

Saying that if they dont buy ebay google might be powerful enough to get their own auction site off the ground. I have no doubt they've looked into one option or the other - ebay is HUGE and will continue to get bigger for sometime.

It would be really nice for ebay to have some competition. We all know that ebay of late has not really helped its customers during disputes, in spite of charging higher fees
Competition would help sort that

As for creating there own ebay type system, they could probably tie it all in with there search engine and advertising systems, so in theory it could get one hell of a lot of exposure!
