thinking of getting a nice watch
ok well ive got a rather big bracelet 14ct gold 261 gramms that i never wear, thinking about getting rid of it and putting the money into a watch instead
but my worry is depreciation, my bracelet i know will allways be worth very good money even at scrap value and wont depreciate, i have a insurance valuation on it of £3800 i know its a bollocks price but still nice to have it
not sure what it would fetch but i would imagine a grand upwards
i want chunky solid looking, i dont want leather strap, i want a watch that actually looks its worth, some watches ive seen just look so cheap even though they had price tags of a grand or so
but i do not want to buy a watch then 2 years down the line for it to only be worth 500 quid

Get a Rolex a few years old. For that kind of money you'd get a nice full gents yacht-master bi metal strap and gold bezel, just like mine

Yep - all watches depreciate.
They're a bit like cars - they have to be really old before the depreciation stops and they start to gain some of the lost value.
Plus they tend not to be scrapped.
Keep your gold and buy a cheapish second hand "chunky" watch.

expensive watches arent my thing, but understand about depreciation. the way the world works, unless its rare...
my mrs bought me a £50 sekonda titanuim watch for my 21st two years ago. taken some real abuse, as i only take it of for a bath, and its still going strong and looks nice when im on a night out etc.
but obviously your after something more high end

Rolex have a good second hand market so buy one a year ish old with box and papers and you won't lose too much but in terms of craftmanship and quality they are not up to the likes of IWC Vaccheron constantin and Ullesse (sp) Nardin. Personally my next watch will be a citizen minute reapeater with perpetual calender as normally watches with these complications are 40-100k and citizen do one for £400. Remember is about quality not brand.\Rado also do some nice watches for around a grand but not really a good second hand market. Longines may be worth looking at as well.

Rolex.. Oyster Perpetual Date Explorer II.. and as said a second hand one from a good specialist.... bargain yourself down and get a deal
Believe they are now £2740 list.... but 10 years + ago they were £2045...

I tried lots of watches, depends on the size of your hands but IWC panerai and other oversize watches all look slightly out of proportion. I went for a year old Rolex sea dweller, 2.5 rather than 2.9, ( bought from dealer so perhaps could have been cheaper but you cannot be too careful with fakes ). Also make sure you get all papers box tools etc as theses count for 20% of the value. As has been said before everything depreciates so make sure you make the right choice then keep it for a long time.

If you want some bling then Rolex is an obvious choice and if you buy used it won't depreciate horribly. New they are overpriced imo, but then the brand sells because people like the flash... always a market for them.
IWC are top quality and you could get a s/h one in that range. They're quite understated as a rule though.
Slightly more leftfield options - Bell & Ross (US instrument-type watchmaker) or Anonimo (Italian style).

I have a Tag Heur and a Brietling but they are both replicas
My mate has the real deal Brietling and if you put the 2 together you cannot tell them apart, same weight, automatic movement, identical in every way except mine cost £40 from Turkey and his cost £2800.
I wouldnt waste my dosh on a watch

Pah - my Casio G-Shock has been on 4 operational tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, countless excercises, temprature extremes of -30c and 50c+, endless abuse.. and still looks like new - not sure a "high end" watch would cope with that kind of abuse.
That said - I'd love a really nice watch, but I'd be scared of damaging it - something I know won't happen with a g-shock!

I totally agree that if you have the real deal and you are satisfied with knowing yourself its real fair play , but TBH most people have them for show or else they would but a Seiko or something.

And a car will always depreciate if you use it, which isn't true of all watches, although it is true of many.
