Do I need to pay an Italian driving infraction?
Ah, someone else who uses the word 'infraction'
Anyway, got a letter from the Italian Police. I think it is for driving too near to the Opera house in Verona in my crappy Fiat hire car last year! It's taken over a year to get this fine to me.
It's for 80 euros
If I ignore this will I get arrested upon my first visit to their thieving country and thrown into the nearst cells to be pummelled by european sailors!
The letter has 'Signature Required' on the front but they posted it through the door whilst we were both out, so they have no record of my recieving it.
I didn't think we had to pay foreign fines? How am I supposed to avoid areas I am not allowed to frequent if I can't read the language?
Advice anyone?

I didn't think there were any road laws that applied in Italy?
From my experience, speed limits were the minimum required speed, lane dividers merely advisory and traffic lights only suggested when it might be less dangerous to enter a junction. All other signs were too much of a blur to read! Most liberating driving experience ever!
Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about it - it's unlikely you'll be on their top 10 most wanted list. However, if you plan to go back in the next year or so, it may clear your concience to pay it - E80 isn't too much at the end of the day......

It deoends on how developed their big brother Stasi state is... If they have your passport number at the car hire desk you may get grief on re-entry to Italy... Maybe mention mates in low places and horses' heads

I doubt they'll be at your door/at the border waiting for your return. Unlike the Swiss border guards...but that's another story. If it was a rental car, I'd forget about it...

You will probably get deported to Italy to face the consequences.
Let's face it the police haven't got anything better to do here. Tony Blair will no doubt appear on TV telling how he's getting tough on criminals and tough on crime.
Let us know how you get on
ps bin it and take your holidays somewhere else.

Dont worry about it, I have Italian family and we go there for holidays at least once a year. Parking fines etc we just ignore them.

Update:
The hire compay (AVIS) have my credit card details! Can the Italian Police just end up charging any fines to that? Or is that against the law?
Apparently I have signed something in the hire agreement that says I am liable for any fines to the company (i.e. Avis)

You have just lost your credit card. Report it and cancel it. You will then receive a new one with a new number and no one can touch it.
