Default Where to buy new fireplaces ??

Looking to replace our fireplace. We're looking for a wooden mantle with something like a black granite background and hearth. Been to a couple of showrooms and, including fitting, we're getting quotes in the region of £2000 which seemed a lot ???

Can't help thinking that there must be cheaper ways to do this ie from the internet, or factory direct? anyone had any good experiences they can pass on??

We live in the Fleet, Hampshire area and would be prepared to travel a reasonable distance.

Thanks in advance for any help.

One of my friends (and fellow Scoobynetter!) has a long-established fireplace shop in Send, Woking which isn't too far from you.

His user ID is RB5037 and his shop is Wakeford Fireplaces (01483 225767

I bought these two different ones, with all the trimmings cost me about £2300 for both. This company claims to be the cheapest in London and will refund the difference if you prove otherwise. Service was A1, including the fitting.

The pix don't do them justice as they were still being fitted then. I'll try and take some more recent pics for you

£2300 sounds reasonable for two, did that include the fitting?

What's the name of the company and do they have a website?

Cheers

Gixer, I'll dig out the contact details for you. They charged me approx £250 per fireplace to fit, but to be honest that was a bargain. There were brick fireplaces to remove first which people had quoted me £400 to just remove!

He also skimmed of the walls and put new angle beads on where they had been damaged by taking out the old ones.
I've been refurbing my house top to toe mate, and these guys were some of the most professional I've met and cheapest.

I'll dig the number out for you tommorrow.

Started out with this:

We chose Ashtead Fireplaces. £1500 for someone (CORGI registered) to remove the old fireplace, skim the walls, fit the hearth, mantle and fireplace, as well as move a plug socket and plumb in the gas (and fix the boiler as well, but that's another story!!)

They removed the old fireplace and generated 50 bags of rubble:

They skimmed the walls, fitted the black granite hearth, the gas cast iron fire and solid oak mantle:

After I patched in the gap left between the existing parquet flooring and the old fireplace. Lots of sanding as well:

After we painted the walls and varnished the floors:

Andy I think that is expensive. I got mine for less than that and one of mine has a real limestone surround which is more expensive than wood surroundhttp://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...replace016.jpg

We were happy with the cost, the how quickly it was and how professional the fitter was.

It would have cost me £600 for a cheap gas fireplace and mantle from B&Q with a laminate backing and hearth.

I would have needed to remove the old fireplace myself, either with skips or trips to the tip. Pay for a plasterer and a CORGI registered person to come, replace piping that doesn't meet regulations and plumb in the fire. I would have to arrange for the chimney to be swept and have the pot replaced on top of the chimney stack.

After finding all that out, I think £1500 for a solid oak mantle, polished cast iron fireplace and a solid ganite hearth, with all the above work was resonable.

I'd say that you got a bargain!
