Default Getting a birth certificate

I tried applying for a passport for my 10 year old (up to now she was on my wifes) and the post office said that I had included the "wrong" birth certificate - it was a small one & the one needed was the larger A4 one containing more info. Apparantly one is offered but as it costs money most people decline it & take the free smaller one.
Anyway - any idea how I get the larger version ? there are a few places on-line, but being a birth certificate I would imagine that you would need to order it from an "official" source, not a Getabirthcertificate.com type place (of which there seems to be a few)

Any advice welcome.

R.

The 'small' one you're referring to I would have expected to be acceptable - it certainly is for insurance purposes (for instance, life assurance as I work in this field).

I'm adopted and don't have the A4 version!

My wife works for the registration service and tells me you need to contact the registry office for the town where you were born (or where your daughter was born) - Look in yellow pages under local government. You can do this by phone , letter, or in person. They will provide you with a full copy, for a fee (£7), normally within a couple of working day's.
Hope this helps
