I live in a relatively small town, but we have a hospital here to serve not only us, but a large part of the surrounding towns and villages. The hospital is new, built only a few years ago under the governments private finance initiative. It looks amazing, its even reasonably clean. Of course there is now no parking as they sold all that land off.

It seems they have forgotten to employ staff. We have brand new wards that are closed. We also have children who are so ill that they must stay in hospital overnight. Only problem is that they cannot find the cash to employ any nurses to work the night shift.

So what do they do? They get an ambulance to taxi them to the next nearest hospital to stay overnight, only to return them back to our hospital during the day. This process goes on each and every night, and for several people.

So the next time you need an ambulance, and its late....its cos some penny pinching sod up in Whitehall made them ferry sick children between hospitals using the existing ambulance budget, rather than spending some money on nurses. Can you just imagine how those kids are feeling?
