Bit of help drafting a letter please
Following my previous post about me ******* up my girlfriends flat. . . . .
It turns out she is not insured - but I am (by way of Personal Liability).
As I was obviously in the wrong doing what I did to cause the damage - she now has to claim against me.
She needs to write me a legalish letter to me - which I will be shoving in my insurers's direction.
Please can someone give me a hand writing this?
Ta

OK - Thanks. Stupid bugger
I take it you just stay there and g/f has tenancy agreement? I think I'd take the safe route and suggest that g/f explains to a solicitor what has happened and get them to send you a suitable letter on her behalf. I think it might be helpful if someone got an approx quote to clean the place up although some insurance companies have their own nominated contractors. Best of luck. dl

OK to answer your question. Here is a letter which other can shoot down in flames
Dear Mr Knight,
Damage to my Kitchen
I refer to the incident on xx/xx/2007 when my kitchen was damaged by smoke from a cooking pan which you were using.
As you know the pan overheated causing smoke damage to the room and possibly some damage to the boiler.
I need to get the room redecorated and the boiler checked over and repaired as necessary. I hold you responsible for this damage and require you to meet the full costs of this work in a timely manner.
Please confirm that you will undertake to meet such costs in writing within 14days from the date of this letter.
Yours etc,
========
You can bang something in about the estimated cost if you like.

I work in insurance claims. I reckon David's letter is pretty good - as he says, all your g/f needs to do is to say who the parties involved are, confirm why she is holding you liable and provide documentation in support od the costs (written estimates).

PS See David - you're still flying high !

how's this:
RE: Damage to my Flat
I refer to the incident on 21/02/2007 when my flat was damaged by smoke from a pillow, which you left on top of the boiler.
As you know the pillow caught fire (but being a flame retardant pillow) just created a lot of acrid smoke. This has caused damage throughout the flat and to its contents.
There is some physical damage to the boiler and it’s surrounds.
I need to get the flat redecorated and the boiler checked over and repaired as necessary. I also need to replace my personal possessions; which despite my best efforts in cleaning still retain the smoky smell. I hold you responsible for this damage and require you to meet the full costs of this work in a timely manner.
I am currently getting estimates for the cleaning of the property, and will advise you the costs as soon as I have them. I have however provided a list (attached) of the contents that are beyond my repair.
Please confirm that you will undertake to meet such costs in writing within 14days from the date of this letter.
Yours sincerely,

Up to you my friend. I would have thought the pan explanation was more plausible and, from what you said, is what actually happened.
Do pillows behave in this way?
Its rather than it's and 14 days not 14days (my error). Don't need a ; after possessions.
Note my experience with my own insurance company was that they were fairly relaxed for damage that cost under £1000 to put right and were happy to accept an estimate that I provided (this was for internal water damage). Over a grand and they sent down an assessor and used their own nominated contractor to undertake the repair (this was garden storm damage btw). dl

The pillow didn't catch fire, it chemically reacted to the heat from the boiler where it had been placed, by you, and left unattended for a prolonged period of time
