Mobile phone dilemma - what to go for next......
Currently got an N70 on Vodafone. Very happy with the provider - they've actually been brilliant
The N70, however (IMHO) is sh1te. I've never been a fan of Nokias, but at the time, the N70 looked a bit more substantial and the Symbian OS looked usable
I was wrong. I've done the firmware updates, and it's still a SLOWWWWW phone It's now getting annoying.
Thankfully, my contract is up soon, so I'm trying to draw up a shortlist of phones to upgrade to (and yes, I will be paying for my upgrade )
The requirements are -
1. Not a house brick (smaller than the N70)
2. MP3/Camera useful, but not IPod/MP3 player spec!!
3. PC syncable
4. DECENT predictive text
The shortlist so far is :-
Nokia N95 - not sure as it's still unreleased, + my PDA does everything that this phone does extra (GPS etc) IF it's a faster OS
S/E W850i - like the look of this phone, but got SEVERELY put off by owning a T610, which was THE worst phone I've ever owned. The 850 seems to have a lot of functions I just wont use (MP3 player for example, as I've got an Ipod in the car), so I'm a little bit wary....
S/E P990 - only downside is that it is a house brick (even compared to the N70!) + the above caution
I won't entertain the idea of Motorola, as I hate the keys with a passion.
The Iphone (I'm waiting for the Mac guys to take the p1ss - running joke, as I swore I wouldn't look at one! ) is also an option, but not sure about a full touch screen.
Samsung D840/D900 - any good?
Samsung D800 (Pink) - not for me. Wifey upgrades at the same time. Our dog ate her brand new D600 (), and she's been on a Nokia 32xx (the flashing light one), but quite likes the look of the D800. Any good?
Any thoughts on this lot?
Are there any I've not thought of?
Not looking at Pocket PC phones, as whilst potent, I want a phone first, the additional functions second, and even with my current Ipaq, it's the other way around....
Any comments would be extremely appreciated
Cheers,
Dan

Very slim and compact,
Great camera,
Good PC sync and file transfer
Predictive text Urg, I never use that so can't comment, but the keyboard is manual entry text friendly!

SE K800i
3.2 meg camera (950 doesn't have one)
Quality finish
Can sync with pc and is mp3 compatible too.
Predictive text is good.
W850 is too much like the W800 from last year andthe finish of the handset is poor FWIW.
Regards
Esh
PS I'm an SE fan having owned SE's over the last four years.

Just been looking in a bit more depth -
not too keen on the x830 - don't think I could get used the key layout!!
Need to look at the D800 (for the wife) & 900 too
The main difference I can see between the K800 & the W9850, is the camera - and the K800 wins on the camera front..... correct?
Also, not seeing much love for the Nokia stuff
Any other recommendations?
Dan

8800 does nothing.
K800i (which I have) is pants.
N70 (which I had) WAS pants.
N95 looks ok.
Try PDAs, Mobiles & Wireless Networking - eXpansys UK Limited and go to the mobile forums.
Good luck

mmm, lots of interesting replies there people - many thanks
There just doesn't seem like there's much choice out at the moment, nor in the forseeable future - the new phones don't exactly look inspiring either
I like the look of the W850, but it's now getting on a bit (well, about 9 months old!). Will probably wait and see what happens. The N95 looks intriguing, but again, has a load of stuff that I won't need (GPS - got a pda with TomTom on it!) multi-slide front panel....
D'Oh!!!
Any other flashes of inspiration out there?

Mart I think you may just have a crap one. Have two here and both are great. No lock ups or crashes in 8 months. Most reliable phone I've ever had and I generally change every six months.
Camera with proper flash is about the best out there. Mp3 player although I dont really use it. Syncs with pc. 3G. I'd put my vote for the k800.

K800 is a good all rounder, it's a good phone firstly and the rest of the features work well, possibly battery life and size could be better.
Motorola V6 is a good phone if you like flippers, I swap between the K800 and V6 every few weeks, makes me feel like I have a new phone each time.

Oh yeh.....
How does this work then?
Got in touch with Vodafone to find out when I can upgrade. Got a few weeks to go yet, but I found myself in Fones4U today. The sales person was asking about what I was after etc.
Upon being told that I was still technically in contract, she said that they could buy me out of the remainder of my contract!!! And then, obviously start a new one....
How does this work then - presumably the catch is that you have to sign up for a new/different contract.....
As it stands, I just left her to it, as I find shopping centres a traumatic place at the best of times!!
Any ideas?
Dan

The idea of the N95 is that it can do everything.
You say that you want mp3 but not a good one. You want functionality but you have a PDA.
Why don't you sell/bin your old rubbish and just get 1 device to do it all
N95 it is then
Oh and I currently have an N70. I hate it too, purely because of the sloooooow nature of everything about it. I phoned orange to see about an upgrade to the N95 and they said "its not out yet and we might not even do it if its as bad as the N70" Now theres no way Nokia don't know that sort of info so I'm betting the N95 will have sorted out many many bugs.
Don't forget that the rest of the N series aren't anywhere near as bad as the N70

N95 on paper looks the dogs but I'll put money on the first batches will be buggy as hell and require a few FW updates to become stable.... always the way with the top end phones.

Texting is tedious with the pen but if linked to a PC theres software which looks pretty much like outlook express so sending texts is just like email.
Can get my emails on it and can use it for proper internet access (Scoobynet, ebay etc)
I've put in a 2GB SD card so also use it for file transfer between work and home rather than memory stick.
Using the phone is OK but it is a PDA first. Can hear people fine in my car with TSL grp N backbox. Camera is pretty crap though.
Think the 3100 has better camera but don't use camera at all. I can use a digital camera and plug the SD card from the camera into the phone and access the photos from the phone.

I see what you're saying about the Nokia, but I have to admit to being wary, just as I am with the Ericsson My Ipod works brilliantly. My Ipaq works brilliantly...
The same comparison could be drawn from HiFi seperates compared to MIDI systems. MIDI/All-in-one does everything OK, but will never be a match for seperate components.....
Interesting - got some info back from Phones4U.... yes, they can buy you out of your existing contract, as long as you sign up to a new contract with them!!
The downside? Well, if your existing contract is pretty good, they won't continue the contract (if discontinued). In my case, this wasn't worth it, as mine contract is perfect for both my wife and I.
Long and short of it? Going to have to wait until I can "officially" upgrade, or buy the phone I want (still undecided!! ) off Ebay or whatever....... then sell the phone they offer me as an upgrade
