This should make you think
Have a look at this fantastic image of Saturn and Earth in the distance.
APOD: 2006 October 16 - In the Shadow of Saturn
And then consider what Carl Sagan had to say about an earlier image of earth taken from deep space.

There is no answer. Whatever we do or don't do is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Just get on and enjoy whatever time you have left.
I think this line from Sagan sums it up.
"There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world"

Although the picture is awe-inspiring, without getting too intellectual on this, since man cannot possibly comprehend his surroundings on that scale, i fail to see what makes man's power struggles etc on Earth "folly"? It's all we know - we don't have a choice. If we don't do whatever it is we're driven to do in our lifetimes on Earth, when will we do it? I don't see why a picture of the cosmos has to put all that into some sort of context which ultimately is meaningless to most, if not all of us.

Exactly. It is because we are alive, that we have to do what we have to do in our lifetime. So we might as well enjoy it while we are at it. And some of that enjoyment comes from wonderment and awe at our surroundings on our own planet and beyond.
However if it teaches us a little humility, that might just prevent us from taking ourselves too seriously.
