1 million sign petition!
Further to the post of the new tax proposed........
Over 1 million have signed the petition on the government website about a new car tax but according to the BBC news it wont change a thing. They're going to to do trials in the next decade even though taxes like the inner London charge have been proven not to reduce pollution.

One day everyone on here will realise that you can't beat the collossal group of t0ssers that is our Government. Will be interesting to see how many die hards continue to persist with their Scoobies etc when the running costs double.

It was mentioned on the news today and it was reported that the petition would have little or no effect.
Only rioting as with the poll tax tends to have a dramatic effect on Government policy.
A batch of signatures on paper would probably end up in the shredder.
Nik.

The simple thing is don't have the box installed, I won't be.
For once use the infringement of the human rights act for a genuine reason. Its nothing more than a tracking system to kepe an eye on everyone all the time and to rob you blind in the process.

I will not have that thing in my car. No-one has the right to track where I am, what I am doing, or how I got there. That is where I draw the line. We know that having a million people out on the streets makes no difference to our government; that was amply demonstrated by the Iraq war. A million signatures, although a great result, will have little effect. As someone else mentioned, the only time government policy reflects what the people want is when they riot. If this ever gets through, it won't be difficult to wreck the system if you're determined and feel strongly enough about it. We only get trodden on like this because as a nation, we Britons don't like to complain and aren't used to doing it properly.

You couldn't design a better way of encouraging Britain's 'motoring underclass' to grow though. I'll be joining them soon at this rate if taxing and insuring my car means being tagged and tracked.

Just posted it up for info, as for all the peeps that reckon they wont have, you will cos you're told to, same as having to pay road tax, having to pay inflated prices for insurance, paying speeding fines, having MOT's etc etc

As someone already mentioned, if it's electronic, there will be a way of getting round it, there will be a black box which you will be able to buy which plugs into the black box and fools it into thinking that the car's stationary.
Not that I'd ever do that...................

That would be pointless, your vehicle will still be seen by cameras whilst out on a journey, the data between the box in your car and camera won't match up, and therefore you will find a nice letter through your letterbox from the DVLA telling you to sort it or pay a fine!

Well spotted. Personally I'm for it. I don't do big mileage so it won't cost me any more, and if it stops pikey doleites avoiding buying tax disks it's got to be a good thing.
Would still rather they just abolished tax and gave everyone free fully comp insurance, and put all costs for it onto petrol though. No way around it then.

Typical government mentality - if they can figure out how to solve the problem they just tax it instead after having various committee meetings and input from consulting groups of course.

Maybe more relevant to say zero people signed the 'pro road charging' petition. But of course you knew that.
I've signed it just cos it'll show Blairs disregard for public opinion. He puts an awful lot of time and taxpayers money into his "I'm a straightforward kinda guy" image and all these crappy initiatives like "the big debate" roadshow, but at the end of the day it's all bull****.

The laws have already gone through Parliament to allow the fitting of the black box. The punishmnets have already been determined and have been passed. The Govt. bless them, sneaked these through in other motoring laws. You must also allow agents(?) access to your vehicle to check that the equipment has not been tampred with. There will be a considerable number of checks done as you go about your business. Its up to 6 months in prison for any tampering.
You (sorry WE) have already been well and truly screwed. The only thing we can do is what happened with the poll tax. The Govt always makes room in the over crowded prisons for motorists.
The Governments contempt fo the people they serve is quite evident.

£200 per black box x 33million cars = £6 billion to put in place part of the infrastructure . Surely that money would be better spent on education or healthcare?
Did anyone see the numpty ABD representative on GMTV this morning. Opportunity to state the anti case to a national audience, and he completely blew it. Admittedly there appeared to be technical difficulties, but his answers were very terse and did not offer any explanation. "Why did you start the petition", "Someone had to" Should have explained that we are already taxed enough, increasing duty on fuel would have the same effect, foreign registered cars will not be included, etc.

The amount of data involved in a system like this is amazing. Since I can't think of a single government IT project that's worked, I can't see how the incompetents will handle this either.
Anyone have any tech specs? Number of cars on road at once * (data size * transmit frequency) = rather a lot of data to be stored, daily.

i reckon the whole thing's potentially illegal under the EU bill of human rights that guarantees the right to freedom of movement without intrusion by the state ... knowing where you go on the public highway 24x7 using GPS location is a pretty serious intrusion. watch out for the fight-to-the-death test case ...
is it true that wrapping a GPS antenna in tin foil jams the signal? or is it an Internet myth? any comms specialists care to comment?
