Default Best cinema/surround sound system on a budget?

I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago about a long-service award I'm about to get at work, and asked for recommendations on a recordable dvd player for circa £250 - £300.

I've now changed my mind and want a cinema/surround sound system instead for around the same price. It will be to accompany my 32" LCD.

My only requirement is that it had satellite speakers (so my son can't start pulling wires all over the shop!).

Any one got any experiences for that sort of money??

Thanks in advance

I got a set of Tannoy speakers and a Yamaha Amp from Richer sounds a month or so ago, that was about £300.

Ive wall mounted the speakers and hidden the wires and for the money it is very good, but I need to stress 'for the money'.

I auditioned Kef 5005's speakers a little while back and its not as good as that but then they were nearly a grand! I had a all in one Sony system before and the new setup is much better - much more bass (even if it is a bit raw and boomy) and definitely a step up from the onboard sound from my Tosh LCD screen.

My plan is to keep them for about 6 months and then upgrade the speakers and then the amp as funds/technology dictates!

Cheers

Richard

Looks smart, but the Bose website says it's for computers

There's an Xbox branded 5.1 system but it doesn't mean it has to be used in conjunction with an xbox...
Spherex Inc. - Xbox 5.1 Surround Sound System

I looked at it cos it had omni watsit satalite speakers, wanted a system for my parents on a budget...

In the end i got an LG one that has a divX Xvid DVD player / am_fm RDS tuner built in from Currys for £100 - does the job happily, LHT360

They do have a wireless version...

Im sure a Bose would sound v good...

I'm not sure whether you wanted a DVD cinema system or just the speakers and amp but I was after a panasonic DSC 353. You should be able to pick it up for around £240 ish

DCS-353 Home Theater System (Pioneer-DCS353) - PriceGrabber.com - UK

What HFI did a review special at the end pf last year and it won its group against other budget systems for sound and funtionality. It even has an HDMI input too!.

I was gonna buy an av reciever/amp for upto £500 but I found this site pixmania.co.uk. The following link is for a sony reciever that supports hd tvs has enough inputs and outputs etc, and is also a 6.1 sound system (has dolby digital ex / dts es / prologic etc)
Not bad money either, just ordered mine so hopefully will recieve that tomorrow.

Andy, pop by mine sometime and you can witness a Sony all in one.

Don't know the model but was £700 ish a few years ago and i know they've come down ALOT! !

On the 3rd one now as i updated the 1st, 2nd got stolen and was replaced with the present.

Can't fault the system for what i want out of it. It's in a 3x4 room and the bass speaker is in the furthest corner away and you can feel the bass when watching a film with the volume turned up.

As a point, Max vol is 40

10 is the normal TV viewing volume

16/20 is the normal "lets watch a film with company"

30 is when you're on your own and don't need to talk to anyone (you can't)

Doesn't distort at 40. Unless it's a really bass blowing film (but just too much for an hour or so)

Catch up soon buddy.

Thanks for the offer Adam, but living in a 'new' semi and with AJ's room above the loungs and neighbours next door, I doubt I'll be having much opportunity to pump up the volume

Will catch up soon though - I want to see the new RS6 I keep hearing about

Hope the family's well mate.

I went into the Sony centre in Woking yesterday and chatted to a guy there. He said as I already have a resonable dvd player (Sony) he said to just get an amp and speakers. He's suggested an HDMI type thingy at circa £230:

Sony : HT-SS1000 (HTSS1000) : United Kingdom

It doesn't have satellite speakers, but he reckons you lose a little quality with those anyway.
