Petrol receipts or the £0.40 per mile (10000= £4000)(£0.25 over 10k) which is better and does the "whole" sum come off the "income" before profit is applied.

and presuming i started "working" at end oct 2006 tax would'nt be payable till 2008?

I know the stock answer is get an accountant and i have got a couple to speak too, but it's their "mad " time of year for existing clients.

The way it works for me is that my expenses claim (eg £100 petrol) comes off before tax and is then added back on and given to me - hence not taxed.

I only have to provide petrol receipts that support the mileage not the actual value being claimed. I.E if I'm claiming for 200 miles I only submit a receipt for approx £40 not £80 (40p x 200 miles)

You are correct that the tax fom 2006 is payable in 2008. Of course there may be different ways of submiting tax stuff etc so I hope some other people comment.
