But it may be just as likely that your son has been flaffing around with it and hasn't got to grips with how it is supposed to work. I speak from experience

You will need to call apple, who will then ask you to send it into them, they will provide a box and free postage, they will receive it and either fix it, or replace it, takes about two weeks in total. (Former apple employee)

After six weeks you have ample grounds to reject a faulty item. Contrary to what you may be told a guarantee is there for you to benefit from if you wish but it is not your only recourse and you are not obliged to do so.

Accepting a service exchange for kit thats had three weeks of use would be foolish.

If he pushes his heels in apple will probably replace it, but he would still be required to send it into them first, unless the shop changes it.

Jonno - the shop are obliged to refund or exchange it (and Currys will have plenty I would think) If it can shown to be faulty and if a receipt is produced. d

Having just returned a dead DVD recorder to Currys (after ten weeks ownership), they just swapped it for a new one. Took about five minutes and no debate.

I'd take it back to Curry's as a first step, as they should replace it without question. If they refuse then return it to Apple, and I'd make sure Apple know that Currys were being arseholes about not accepting it.

If I recall correctly, when you ship and iPod back to Apple you might not get the same iPod back. This taken from the iPod service page:

When we receive your iPod and confirm that the service request matches the iPod’s condition, we will send you a replacement iPod that may be new or refurbished. The replacement iPod will be functionally equivalent to your iPod when new.

Also, before you do anything, make sure you have a copy of the data that's on the iPod, as if you replace it then any info on it will be lost.
