Question really for business / factory managers / systems analysts:

From time to time I get asked to put together various database applications for stock control.

The latest project I'm looking at first needs me to do a fair bit of research - its a tired manufacturing facility that is littered with oily job cards that get passed from pillar to post as inventory moves through the factory from raw material, into process areas, and finally into finished product for shipping. All this paper work seems terribly inefficient so I was looking for some inspiration...

Can any of you experts on here point me in the right direction for reference material / books for putting in a new system that can do away with the paperwork ? Even case scenarios that you've done in the past. Eg. how do the like of competitive industries like car manufacturers handle it, like Nissan, etc...

Any help would be appreciated.
