Most Chinese restauranteurs are Cantonese I think..... Mandarin is regarded as a 'higher' (for want of a better description) language though.

I speak Cantonese as my second language.
I'm product designer so I reckon learning Mandarin will give me that little extra in my career since most products are now being sourced in China

Mandarin would be the one to go for if you're dealing with China rather than HK.
They both sound the same to me though, I can't speak either.
