Question Anyone know anything about mitre saws?

What's the difference between a "compound mitre saw" and a "sliding compound mitre saw"? Both are electrical........

TIA,
Alcazar

I'm a helpful chap so I'll take a stab at this

I would imagine the difference is that the non sliding one the blade just pivots up/down and the sliding one it pivots up/down and can be slid forward and backward.

Effectively the non sliding saw can only cut the diameter of the blade whereas the sliding saw can cut material as wide as the blade can slide.

The sliding one has rails to allow the blade to come across the work and as a result you can cut wider boards. You need to buy a good one otherwise the saw head can wobble and be inaccurate - a twin rail is preferable.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys. It's what I thought, but my mate wasn't convinced as the pics in the Screwfix catalogue looked the same.

I thought it was to do with the angle of the cut that can be done on the left and right.

as said, a sliding one allows you to come down into the wood and slide the saw towards you. Others are fixed and can only cut a certain width - (front to back) (ie probably wouldnt do a floorboard.)

If you want to cut decent sized skirting board get one with plenty of travel
