Question Reasonable?

Just offered £10,250 on a secondhand car with a screen price of £10,995 at a Main Dealer .... and they let me walk away

Not a Subaru - but a 2002 MX5 ..... its Xmas, its freezing, it wont sell for 8 weeks, no PartEx to worry about - I was expecting my arm to have been taken off at the elbow as they grabbed the cash

Their loss I guess?

Maybe they're flush, or selling it at cost - though highly unkikely.

What's book price?

Parkers say £9870 Main Dealer with 40,000miles on it ....... it is showing 16,700.

I thought I was being extremely fair

Holding out.......

Maybe they have a few punters interested.

Seems damn stupid as you were offering so close to screen price.

Wasn't a YTS (showing my age) salesman was it?

There are only 250 of this particular model in the world ..... but, there are 5 on the AutoTrader Website - all coming up for 4 years old now.

They would drop to £10,500 ....... so, they are effectively letting a punter walk away for £250 on a £11,000 car?? Seems really daft to me ...... but money can go anywhere, a metal car stays until it's sold

I would have let you walk as well.
The price is the price, maybe some sort of movement, but they are there to sell cars and make a profit, not give them away.

wtf are you paying 10 grand for a nearly 5 yr old Mx-5 for?

excuse the old stereotype but

are you gay?

are you bent?

do you like it up the mavis fritter?

does size count for you?

Lord Shrek.....rather be seen in a yellow 1987 Proton 'Triple valve' with Mr and Mrs 'Netto shopping' Scum than be seen in a red convertible Mx-5 with some public school tosser called Harry

They're probably playing the same game as you Pete and seeing if you'll call back and up your offer if you really want the car. As a punter, always be prepared to walk away and look/haggle for a better deal. You may get lucky and get a phone call after xmas, or you could ring them back yourself and ask them if they're prepared to reconsider your offer, otherwise you'll take your time and money elsewhere.

Hanslow ... quite correct - I am a very old hand at this malarkie

Money ALWAYS talks ... as money can walk wherever it likes ... a car on a forecourt can only go if a buyer is found.

There is one with 9,000miles, rather than 16,700miles, where I will be in the New Year - also at a Main Dealer - so, will have a look there

I do 2,000 miles a year in the MX5 ... after 5 years, that 9,000miler will be showing just 19,000miles at nearly 10 years old! And, if there were only 250 to start with, I will be sitting on a nice little motor

I reckon they will see sense and ring on Saturday.

You have to pay for MX5's

I thought as only hairdressers, gay men and little ladies drove them, that they gave them away

Car dealers are certainly an odd bunch. 2 years ago I offered £1k below screen at a BMW main dealer and they had a few chats and declined. Two weeks later they dropped the screen price by £2k !!!!

Go back in Jan Pete and offer £250 less than you did

Pay what you think its worth ! If you're moaning about it then pay the price or much nearer to what they are asking.

What else is the dealer offering ? WHat else are you afetr apart from a good price ?
