It is definitely not a fake.
It looks to me like the Thomson Contender (Encore). This is a single shot pistol designed to take a rifle bullet. There are many barrels available, and they are quickly interchangeable. It can be customised for any calibre.
(The best one is the .223, 'cos I had one back in 1982)
