Help DVLA/ poss dodgy dealer
Hi all, I apologise for the long drawn out story but here goes.
I bought a Saab 93 Aero (HOT) coupe Y reg from a Garage on 21/06/06 It was a part exchange deal with me trading in a Y reg Mazda 323, at the time the mazda had a month or 2 to go before the tax was due to be renewed.
When I picked up the Saab, the dealer said he had put 6 months tax on it but that I was to pay for it, at the time I hadnt any means of paying him for it as he hadnt mentioned this before, (also they gave me bit of run around for a about a week, as when i test drove it the oil light came on, they kept giving me excuses for a week then said it was sorted blah blah Itook it out and it didnt come on so i went ahead) He said I could send a cheque and said "as I dont want to have to send the boys round" .
2 days later the oil light came on, I didnt take it back to the garage as I knew they would just **** me about and it was a fair journey from where I live. i took it to a local saab specialist he knew the problem right away, cost me £200 to sort and has been fine since, so I was pissed at the garage for basically lying to me about the problem so I never sent a cheque for the road tax.
soooo to the point now finally lol......on 2/9/06 i receive a letter from the DVLA stating "Failure to relicense Vehicle" this was related to the Mazda I traded in. Said according to their records I was the owner of this on 27/06/06 and that I had failed to relicense it so I had to pay £40.00 if I did not do so £80 the court etc.
I admit I did forget about it for a few weeks, I then phoned DVLA and was told I couldnt talk to anyone and to put it in writing. I havent done so yet as I am unsure whats going on or if I am at fault? I then got a letter from DVLA on 2/10/06 saying thanks for telling them I am no longer the keeper of the M<azda 323. Now into December the tax was up for the Saab at end of November, I have not recieved a SORN for it and when I went to tax it online I got a message saying that the previous tax disc or sorn on the vehicle last expired on 9/06/06 and that the registered keeper would be notified of the offence.
According to the Registration certificate I have for the Saab it states I aqquired vehicle on 22/07/06 but I aqquired it a month earlier??? so I am mighty confused??
Just noticed in the paperwork that the previous woner of the Saab re registered the original number plate from a cherished plate on 3/06/06, not sure if that has any bearing on my problem??
ANyone shed any light on what may have happened? the gagrage is an independent garage owned by what I am now told are Gangsters, and I could believe it so I am reluctsnt to hpone them and start getting stroppy. sorry to have bored you all any help appreciated. Thanks

When you part exchanged the Mazda, you should have given the V5C to the new dealer, and in return recieved part of the V5C back for YOU to post back to the DVLA. Basically the onus is on you to tell the DVLA you no longer own the car, not the buying dealer. The plate transfer is the most likely delay in the V5 for the SAAB.
