If you want to save your money then buy a projector.

I've got a Pioneer 506 XDE that cost me £3.5k, but if I'm watching a film, I always use my projector which is a Panasonic and cost me around £1300 - even with the motorised 8' wide screen it came in at under 2k.

Not as good with too much ambient light, but in the dark it's awesome.

I have a 50" SONY DLP LCD rear projection similar to that.... It's not a plasma or a true LCD, but for the price it's a great set, I find. The plasmas in the sub 4 grand category aren't really worth buying, they just seem to rely on a bright picture that is slow and not that crisp, IMO... Trying to watch football on an inferior plasma is pointless. Watching HD on mine is a great experience. With these new DLP rear projections, the viewing angle and picture is greatly improved on the old RP sets, which were always a bit crap.

Have to agree with the vote for the front projector and screen, that's the next step for me in a month or two, hopefully......

I think Epson have brought out a projector with a built in DVD that works well in many conditions.......

For this price range, a good 36" CRT is probably going to give you a better all round picture, though.... However my lounge is too big for a 36", I wouldn't be able to see it!

This 50" Samsung has had decent reviews and is under £1500. I've seen it in the flesh in John Lewis, and it looked pretty good.
