There is a level at which the extra money spent achieves only a very slight improvement - I want a pair that are just at the point at which the cost becomes larger than the gain in quality, if you get my drift?

I am NOT one of those who pays £20 a foot for silver speaker wire - the cost does not equal the gains.

Well, as I thought I pointed out ......... I am interested in the headphones which sit at the point that quality/cost change over.

I am not willing to spend an extra £30 on a set which are 5% better, say.

Imagine some costing £1 in the Poundshop? For £10 you get a vast increase in quality and it is noticeable ..... for £20 you will get a smaller increase in quality and it is slightly less detectable ...... for £30 you will get an even smaller increase in quality and it will be barely detectable at all .....

Not sure of the price points, just an example .....

At some point you end up paying vast amounts chasing very small changes in quality ...... it's just below that point I am shooting for.

its called, extension, frequency range, dynamics, etc,

why bother with in ear headphones?? there so small they dont do justice to the

music your listening too.

a good pair of external cans will pay far better dividends,

I think what Pete is trying to say is, at what point does the law of diminishing returns kicks in.

I'd say at about £20/30. The shure or Sennheiser would be great. However a decent set of sonys for £20 would be fine.

HOWEVER, pete, what are you plugging these headphones into? No point spending out if you're only going to plug it into a lidl cheapo mp3 player. I assume for outside/travelling use? If for home use, then defo go for proper can type headphones.

I was in a similar position recently...didn't want to spend more than £50.

I own the Shure E2C and Sennheiser CX300 - to my ears there is not much difference between them (run from a Ipod Nano new generation).

That said, I also own a pair of Koss sparkplugs and they do decent job for little money and are very comfy.

I use a pair of Sennheiser MX-500's at work for listening to MP3's and have been very impressed with them for the price.

Where the law of diminshing returns "kicks in" depends a lot on what you're listening to through the headphones / earphones, and who you're asking. If you have a top-notch £10k or whatever source, it's silly to "only" pay £50 for the headphones, as you won't get the best out of your much more expensive source. If you have a £20-£50 MP3 player, I wouldn't bother spending more than about £20 on the headphones/earphones.
In a similar vein, the "£20/foot silver speaker cable" can make sense in a top drawer hi-fi system as spending £500 on speaker cable makes a bigger improvement than spending an extra £500 on a CD player or something. however, it makes no sense whatsoever to spend £500 on speaker cable for a £200 midi system!
Also, different people will have different views as to where "diminshing returns" kick in. There is no such thing as a defined "diminsihing returns" point on any range of goods.
So if you're using them for, an i-pod or in this case a Sony MP3, I'd go for something like £20-£30 Senheisers (prefering headphones to earphones) as the rational diminshing returns point.
You can't really expect anyone to answer that politely, even though I'm one of the rare few who has seen a picture of you.

The Samsung device is not meant to be very good. Sony are a has-been and are catching up.

Apple, Creative or SanDisk are the current leaders in the flash memory MP3 player ecosystem.

My Sony Fontopia earphones are still going strong after what must be 2 1/2yrs of hard daily use. Better bass responce compared to others in the same price bracket.
Wife and daughter have them also without fault.
