Determining the sex of a baby from a scan.
My g/f was at the local hospital yesterday for her first scan as she is a few months preg (turns out 4 months). She asked the nurse doing the scan if she could tell if the kid was male or female but was told that although the nurse could determine the fact she wasn't able to tell my g/f the result. Rules is rules after all
The nurse went on that if we wanted to know the sex then we'd have to book a private session costing circa £100.
Now, I can understand why they might not tell parents to be the sex in case we rushed off to the abortion clinic afterward if the resulting information was not to our choice, but this seems to me a sort of extra tax. After all if we were that way inclined we'd know the result after passing over our £100, and off to the abortion clinic we'd go anyway.
Asking around it seems that other localish hospitals freely dispense the information if asked without a ridiculous £100 fee.
Just what the Hell am I paying into the NHS for if I have to top up these payments with extra fees.
BTW we are both white.

It would have ben a sonographer doing the scan, they are limited to what information they are allowed to gain (and tell you) from the scan. For example they can measure various lengths (CR length) and check to see if everything is Ok.....but if they think there is an abnormality they have to call a doctor.
Some hospitals don't always allow sonographers to determine sex (which is a medical diagnosis), your request should have been passed onto the consultant who would have decided on appropriate action !!
NHS consultant services are free at the point of delivery (apologies for the lousy pun)

When we were having our kid, they told us that they would not give out the information because certain elements of the Asian population were abortin girls if it was the first born, and other people had tried to sue hospitals because they had gone out and bought a shed load of girls/boys clothes etc. and it turned out to be wrong.
The ONLY way to tell 100% what sex your child is, is to have Amniocentesis, but that has risks associated with it (1% chance of miscarriage)
Just wait! It's such a nice surprise atthe birth to see, and at the end of the day, as long they are healthy, who cares?

It depends on the local health authority rules. When the wife had her first scan (RBH Reading) they wouldn't say because of the 'kill the female child' stuff that's flying about. And they only did a single scan as well. She had to go for another scan though a couple of months later because she had some possible complications. In that time the rules had changed so we were told the sex ......
As I said, the policy changes from PCT to PCT ....

At our hospital you can find out at the 21 week scan if you wish, no fee etc. They don't tell you at the 12/13 week scan.

Think they said they could tell us but could't guarantee they would be correct.
This was in response to my wife telling them she didn't want to know (It was twins in the end and we had one of each )

We got the sex at the second scan, she told us after we'd asked, I was looking at the black and white screen, I couldn't make out ****, and I said "how do you know it's a boy?"
She said, "Because I can see the *****!!!"
She was right.

I'm not too bothered about finding out. It's just the principle of the thing. The whole 'won't tell you unless you stump up a hundred quid' malarky.
Anyway, here it is
She was told it was 16ish weeks old, looks big to me, but I'm no expert.

She was told the 100 quid was for a private consultation, and this wouldn't be the 3 or 4d (?) version on a dvd.

Yes, L & D refused several people that I know too.
One set of friends had a 3d scan, paid for privately to find out.

I had two scans when i was pregnant with my first child. Both scans said i was having a boy, was so excited, so you can imagine the shock when out popped little Emily. Needless to say when they offered to tell me the sex of my second child i declined.

I could find out at my 20 week scan, but when i went to have the scan done my little one was in a weird position so i never found out, I went out and bought all girls things as I knew myself it was going to be a girl, picked the name, didn't even bother with boys names or clothes etc, lucky for me I had a girl. The scan pic you posted is very clear and the baby does look big, on my first scan Shannon looked like Casper the ghost and was tiny.

Although I would not want to know the sex of my unborn child, and there is the possibility of parents aborting a child of the sex they do not want, I think it is morally wrong not to tell you unless you pay upfront like that. They should be prepared to tell you whatever they see in the scan.

The £100 is for a private sexing scan - some hospitals wont tell you but the rules are not the same for those being treated privately so they can tell you if you pay!
Funnily enough we paid for our 3rd to have a sexing scan and they got it wrong anyway!
Our 4th had 4d scans so it was all very obvious anyway as a 4d scan is light years ahead in terms of clarity.
