Default Assured Shorthold Tenancies

Does anyone know if an assured shorthold tenancy can be drawn up for a property for a shorter period than the normal 6 months?

I have a property i need to let out for around 3 months.

Legally, I don't think so....it's one of the basic features of an AST in that you know, as a tenant, that you've got at least 6 months in your rented property.

...but last year I let for 3 months with an AST that had a "3 month" clause inserted into it and it was a calculated risk that:
- the tenants would actually leave after 3 months (they were going back to Oz, and in fact did so)
- they new less about ASTs than I did!

It turned out OK in the end, but if they'd have decided to stay on of their own accord it might have all become a bit difficult.
