Default Another GPS Thread (Tom Tom vs Alternatives)

I've done a wee search, but as everything moves fast, times might of changed (plus Tom Tom may have fixed the problems which seemed to have plagued the latest batch).

Wanna get a GPS for my bro's b'day. Was lOOking at the TomTom510, but there's so many negative (consumer) reviews on say Amazon etc. The 910 also seems to get bad comments.

Then i saw the TomTom One, got great reviews.

Is it cheaper because it is smaller, or has missing features? I know bugger all about these units, but i know it would be nice if he could get a speed camera warning as well as directions, as he does thousands of miles.

Budget £200-£500.

Comments?

If anyone has some GPS online mag reviews or something that would be grand.

(i'll have to take it out the box just to check it's OK, so if it's any good, i may get one myself )

Was thinking about a DriveSmart for myself, but it would be nice if it could tell me where to go too...

Ive got one.

Pretty good. Only gripe is trying to load Points Of Interests.

You know Supermarkets, Free Cas Machines whilst you are travelling around.

There are free POI'S Sites but, I feel TT make it very didfficult for you to use but, if you BUY one of theirs easy.

Only other thing, it's all on the net can't talk to a human.

On the performance of the TT 1, it's very good.

Hope that helps.

I've found the TT very good bar one thing. I've purchased both the camera updates and the traffic updates too but it hasn't updated the fact that there are roadworks on J25/A10 and you can't get on the m-way at eastbound. I does not divert you via waltham cross .

I'll ned to get in touch with them.

All in all though a good unit

When you mention "buy theirs" how much does that cost?

Thanks.

I have a TomTom One and I haven't seen better sat nav anywhere. For less than £200 you can't go wrong

Easily the best is the Mio 510E, not sure what they cost now but I paid around £220 with the full maps of Europe. Much better than the TomToms.

Review: Mio C710 satellite navigation device - WhatPC?

The 510 is exactly the same as the 710 but comes with maps on a DVD rather than built in so you have to by a 1GB SD Card (£15?) 710 comes with TMC aerial too.

Aye, i'm just reading about the 710, someone stated the rolls royce of sat nav.

Why is it the best and have you compared it to any?

** Sound, was just about to edit and ask for a review, thanks!

I posted before about this, but basically i spent about 2 weeks annoying the shops on Tottenham Court Rd and trying all their satnavs.

Garmin Nuvis - nice but expensive, very quiet speaker
Pioneer/Sony - rubbish, very slow, old maps and paying for the name
TomTom 510/710/910 - beset with problems. The mount has been a big issue, the units aren't exactly small and they break/fall off easily/ Also the 910 has a hard drive which suffers very high failure rates because of vibration.
Michelin - Old maps and quite limited in what you could do.
Mio 510E/710 - Nice graphics, extremely fast route calculations (1-2 secs), cheap, pocket sized (I used it to walk around Milan)

And several thousands km's around Europe and it never skipped a beat, straight to the hotels every night and the sights in the day.

I've got a Garmin Nuvi 300, and i can't find a single thing wrong with it, sure it's small, but the display is super clear in both daylight and night time. Cost just £220 including free update for speed cameras.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm leaning towards the Mio now. Quite like the Garmin Nuvi range, but Mio is ahead, will read more reviews today.

One other question:

- What are these PDA's (Mitac Mio P550 for example) like for doing the sat nav??

(Would be good if it still did the sat nav + cameras, but then you could use it for MS Office, PDA s/ware etc. Dual Purpose.)

i have a nuvi 310 and its brillient, no issues with it in the slightest. Its small and maybe a little expensive but supports bluetooth and has a decent software POI loader that comes with it.

Plus its not a lump like the Tom Toms

Not that I'd do it but on the GPS forums they have managed to hack the Mio 510/710 to expose the Windows CE system and then you can install anything you want.

The software on Mios is based on I-Go which is also available for PDAs, just comes on a single 1GB SD card for all of Europe.

So if i went the PDA route, it would be the same, albeit on a PDA instead of the standalone. hmmmm.....

A friend is loaning me a PDA to program. Does the s/ware work on any, i know his is old.

Just reading something on one forum about it & hacking:

What I like about the TT Go 910 is that It acts my BlueTooth (BT) Hub..

My iPod connects to the TT (TT controls the iPod)
My Phone BTs to the TT for calls/SMS messages
My TT BTs to the phone to get all updates/traffic/whether/etc
My TT BTs to the stereo and plays mp3/iPod/Traffic/Phone/etc

Only issue - three power supplies needed!

I'm gonna get him the Mio 510. I've seen it at £199.99 (inc vat).

Anyone got any links for possible cheaper places? Or recommended suppliers....

Thumbs down Avoid any product from MIO

I got Mio C710 as a Christmas present for my wife. It had been working for a month, then it broke down, sent to repair it (you have to phone premium phone line to tell MIO that they product is not working), came back without the software installed and not completely repaired. I sent it back (another premium phone call) and it arrived with one fault fixed and three new ones added.
MIO's customer support answers e-mails with two weeks delay, if you are lucky you get an answer.
Their customer support phone line costs 35p per minute.
My wife has have C710 for almost 3 months and half of that time that crap **** product has not been working.
