They have these in Chester. Last year some old couple got lifted off the ground in their Rover 100 so now there's huge warning signs all around them!

Yep, we've had the same things happen in Aylesbury - although not for a couple of years

vehicles that are allowed to pass have sensors in them. this transmits a signal to the bollards, which makes them lower. once past the bollards rise, but quickly

Ive seen that happen! People know that there is a bus gate (have you noticed how bright the signs are; even in daylight?); they try to race through behind a vehicle that has a key to operate the bollards, without realising just how quickly they return to their position.....

That was a nasty impact.

Not that the antics were anything expected of a urban SUV driver or white van man, but I'm amazed the system hasn't been banned under PC regulations....The severity of the impact could lay grounds for a case for claims on personal injury. As the claiment could easily claim the bollards were down when he tried driving over...which they were! Plus he would have already passed the warning sign.

Lesson learnt though

On the one hand, yes the people who try to get through are idiots. But on the other hand the bollards do seem to rise a bit quicker than you'd expect in these safety conscious times. It's almost as if they are TRYING to catch the tailgaters. I would also imagine that they are hazardous to pedestrians too, for example if you were crossing the road immediately behind a bus.

Isn't the idea of them to keep vehicles out of city centre, terrorists etc?

Seems like a good idea to me!

It seems to me that if we were to put something simliar in our driveways or carparks at work we'd get sued. It doesn't matter if the driver is wrong to try and get through, its the same as putting razor wire round our gardens. If the burglar gets cut then we get in the **** even though it might seem obvious to us that you'd be cut if you tried to climb over.

This council, however, can obviously get away with causing people to have road traffic accidents with impunity.

Worse than that, as a "road safety" issue, it will no doubt be paid for by some of the £60 speed tax contributions that are being extorted from people.

The video seems to have stopped working (tried it from two machines).
Maybe they've spotted the sudden spike in demand !

I have to admit, I did laugh quite a bit at that, bit mean I know!

Personally, I have no sympathy for the people in the vid, if they weren't doing something that they VERY obviously weren't supposed to be doing, then there would never have been a problem.

New compensation advert:

"Have you been injured doing something you shouldn't have been doing?
TOUGH!!"
