Default I think im going to die....HELP??

Just been to sort my slipped disk with a back specialist.
While I was there he took my blood pressure and it came out as -

1st reading 172/116
2nd reading 176/110

He said I needed to go to the GP immidiatley.

This wouldnt be so worrying exept im only 25!
15.5st 6ft2"

Has anyone got any experience with blood pressure and what did you do?

And yes I do smoke(Obviousley stop now)
And I probably drink to much (as much as any other 25 year old).

To top it off the 1st sprogg is due november so need to get it sorted.

Anyone got any advice??

How much Exercise do you do?
6-8 months ago, I was 16 odd stone, 5ft11 tall. Blood pressure wasnt as high as yours but, on the "above average" side (cholesterol etc was fine - below 4) I was going to the gym at this point and mainly lifting a lot of weights (trying to build muscle).
For the last 3 months, I have been running 3-4miles 3-5 times a week, and am now at 14stone, blood pressure is spot on, and resting pulse is a tad below 60bpm. I have never felt so healthy. Havent adjusted eating patterns or anything!

Seems to be a bit of a stress buster, and I now wish I never bothered spending £40 odd a month at the gym for a year, as I have lost more fat and gained more muscle (from push ups etc) since knocking the subs on the head!)

Best rely on the advice from your GP though, as there may be an underlying reason why your BP is so high ( I would think a Cholesterol check will be on the cards though)!

Good Luck

As he said go to the doctor asap. The doctor will likely fit a device which measures and logs your BP over a 24hr period, and depending on the results will probably prescribe you one of the many products to reduce it. My readings were similar to yours and I've been taking Ramipril for the last 4 months, Ramipril brings mine right down to normal levels but if I miss a day or two it shoots back up.

Smoking and drinking won't help, so if you can stop or cut down that might be best. Also reduce the amount of salt you eat in food, and drink more water to keep yourself hydrated. The doctor may well also do a blood test which includes a cholesterol test.

Also stress puts blood pressure up, its a big factor as why mine is high. If you can reduce your stress in some way (hard I know) it will probably help, but if your BP is normally as high as that I'd guess you'd be looking at long term control by medication. Ask your doctor if your local NHS trust runs any evening classes on stress management, they are very good and don't cost anything.

You probably won't die overnight, it's likely been high for some time so try to get an appointment asap and try not to panic about it too much. The main thing with high blood pressure is it does cumulative damage (e.g. coronary heart disease) over time if left untreated - rather than immediate damage.

All the best.

Smoking is your biggest problem and a huge effect on your BP.

Contrary to popular belief smoking increases your stress levels, so you should notice a huge difference if you quit...

I know I did

Good luck

Guys thanks for the advise.
In reference to a few of the above questions I must admit I am not doing enough exersise (read strolling with the dog and wanking!!) this is somthing that needs to change.(not the wanking).

I am stopping the **** today...no joke it has scared me that much.

Im gonna see the GP in the morning to see what he says.

Just starting to realise that it might be time to grow up...

When you put a CD on, play your favourite track first - just in case

Seriously though, I have to be carefull with this due to a bad family history with heart probs. Don't add salt to anything you eat or cook, if you do already of course. Smoking is the obvious no-no (nothing personal here but why do pepole smoke knowing how much damage it does )

Try to keep your caffine intake down as well, this also raises your BP. A good bit of exercise as already suggested, running and things like that to give you a good cardio work out - although you may need to careful at first, your GP will advise. A healthy lifestyle (exercise diet etc) will also help with stress, which will in turn benefit your BP. As already said you'll feel better all round!

Just remember this day in a few months time as well, when the new found good habits can start to slip.....

Good luck

it may be that you were anxious at the time your BP was taken. if it is still high at the GP he may well ask you to take the equipment home with you, that way you can take you BP in your everyday comfortable environment.

i had to take my blood pressure 12 times over a weekend and come up with an average. this average was consierably lower than the readings i got at the GP's

Yep, otherwise people often have "white coat syndrome" where their BP goes up as they're anxious about being tested.

These days they fit a cuff on your arm connected to a small pack on your belt. It pumps up the cuff every 20 minutes or so (every hour at night) and takes readings for 24hrs. Apart from putting up with it for 24hrs, you don't have to do anything at all. Then the doctor downloads it and looks at your BP for the last 24hrs on a nice graph.

From the British National Formulary:

Possible causes of hypertension (e.g. renal disease, endocrine causes), contributory factors, risk factors, and the presence of any complications of hypertension, such as left ventricular hypertrophy, should be established. Patients should be given advice on lifestyle changes to reduce blood pressure or cardiovascular risk; these include smoking cessation, weight reduction, reduction of excessive intake of alcohol, reduction of dietary salt, reduction of total and saturated fat, increasing exercise, and increasing fruit and vegetable intake.
...
Where the initial blood pressure is systolic 180–219 mmHg or diastolic 110–119 mmHg, confirm over 1–2 weeks then treat if these values are sustained.
As pointed out by the second poster, you need readings at rest when pain free. If the values are sustained at the above levels (there are other thresholds to consider too) I would expect you'd be offered an ECG and blood tests, and possibly other investigations to detect the 10% of people with high blood pressure in whom there is an underlying cause.

I always get a high reading at the gp's, had the 24 hr monitor and it was ok ish, it spiked at 3.30 pm, the doctor said what happened and I said the kids came home !

I get would up about it before I go, itys kind of a guilt thing, all you bad habits come back to haunt you so consequently you worry about it which sends it up.

I had a minor nasal op last year and every time they took it, they just wheel the machine in hooked it up and took a reading, I didnt have chance to think about it and it was spot on normal, low if anything.

Also, my grandad and grandma have had high bp all their lives, my mum and dad do even though they arent that unhealthy (my mum smokes a lot though), my Grandparents are both well into their eighties, my grandmas doesnt even come down on the high dose medicine she is on, I suspect its hereditary for some, but then again so may being a lazy fat git ?

It is important but sometimes GP's can leave you feeling like you wont make it to Christmas.

Just make a few changes and dont fixate on it.

Glad your alright anyway .Often it is the worrying about it, that can do the damage .

So getting it checked out always makes sense, and also the advice from on here as well !!!

Thats a pretty high reading, might have been associated with activity though. You must get it checked by the GP.

When I was in the RAF my pressure was always a bit high at 150 or so. After I had a quad bypass it dropped to 120-virtually as good as you can get. When I was on chemo it dropped to 90 ish and if I stood up quickly I was likely to fall over! Now I have finished the chemo it is coming back up slowly and is about 107 now.

It just goes to show how external happenings can affect your BP considerably.

The doctor might put you on a medication to drop the pressure.

Les
