I will be going on hol to the far east in late Nov and have not sorted out any travel insurance yet. Can anybody recommend a good company that can do the business?

I already bank with First Direct and have ordered my travellers cheques with them. Their quote for insurance was £51 which seemed a bit steep to me.

Finding somebody who covered all the activities we had planned for our trip to Canada in June / July this year was a bugger. Little things like cover for white water rafting up to grade 3 but we did grade 4 (which rocked!)

Presumably thats just for a single trip? European multi trip cover for a family for about £60 includes the UK and satisfies all our needs, and appears to be considerably better vfm.

Different things, travel covers health while away anyway.

Im looking for travel insurance too at the mo for snowboarding.
One thing I have found is its always worth checking the insured limits and how they respond. i.e lost luggage, is there an emergency payment if you are outbound etc.

Worth paying a little more for good cover, rather than the cheapest and getting minimal cover.

I used to use Direct Travel as very competitive. We went to the Maldives in Feb 09 and got stuck in Heathrow due to the snow and were delayed 24hrs so lost one of our nights holiday i.e. cost of Maldives hotel and unknown to us a US$300 surcharge for missing our seaplane connection (through no fault of our own). All we got from Direct Travel is £40 total between us - they didnt even cover having to buy lunch at the airport. As we were just short of 24hrs, if wed been delayed 1hr more wed have got a massive £80. They were not interested in covering anything else. Luckily our persistence with our Travel Agent meant they covered the majority of it as a goodwill gesture.

No doubt thats similar policy wording for most Travel Insurance and youd be amazed what they dont cover that youd expect. Something to be aware of. Yes you should read the small print but lets be fair who has the time or patience to read the entire policy booklet.

Post Office seems to win quite a few industry awards for their insurance and well priced so try them?

Thats shocking mate ! Makes you wonder why you bother.

I had a run in with travel insurance too. Was part of my NatWest Advantage Gold account.
Went to the ER in the USA, gave them all the insurance details, end of.
6 months later I get an $800 bill from the hospital saying the insurance wont respond.

I write to insurance, they send out a claims form. I asked them why im doing this as the claim has been submitted, I get a reply.... another claims form. Oh and a request for the "£50 excess"

6 months later I get a letter from a debt collection agency. I email them and thankfully got onto a really decent guy who helped out. When I told him who my insurers were he responded "oh no, not them, they are one of the worst for this"

Eventually, after him copying me in on all emails, and the insurance company screwing up by hitting "reply to all" and sending him a shirty email about how "the customer" could basically go and do one and could pay it all as they really could not be bothered to settle.... They settled (after a very subtle email from me to all her management)

All that for a £400 hospital bill (for an exam, an xray, and a prescription)

Fingers crossed I dont have to claim again
