I always seem to get problems connecting to news.blueyonder.co.uk
I was wondering:
a) Do fellow blueyonder users experience same problem
b) Are there any alternative news servers I can use

As long as you're happy with no binaries, try these people
http://news.cis.dfn.de . I and most of my friends use them as posts don't seem to go missing. They filter out a lot of the spam too.

I've mentioned the problem to BlueYonder, and they've known about it for a year, but 'don't have it on high priority to fix, as news server isn't that important to our users'
They limit simultaneous connections to a particular newsgroup to 400 people to 'keep a tighter control on things'
What a load of bollox
