Default Talking about (potential) climatic catastrophes....

...whatever happened to acid rain?

Was it real, a scaremongering fear making money spinning tactic (like another we may know and love ), or did it just dilute itself to death?

Where are all the burning searing walk out of your house acid showers that we were promised???

Dunno mate

I'd also like to know what happened to the next ice age we were supposedly entering in the mid 70's, according to the self-same doom and gloom scientists now telling us about so-called global warming

The CO2 that forms carbonic acid and the Hydrogen Sulphide that forms sulphuric acid are now too busy being greenhouse gasses to get involved with the acid rain malarchy.

Perhaps more seriously, yes it was / is an issue, in all likelyhood not as bad as was made out, but it wasn't scaring enough people to cut back on fossils fuels so a new threat was needed.

While you are at it ask them about the hole in the ozone layer, it is expected to reach record size this year because of unusually cold weather in the southern hemisphere. Do you hear the green nutters that only a few years ago where wringing their hands over it? Nope. That is last years global disaster that means you have to send Greenpeace more of your cash.

They're not so sure now that CFCs were at all involved (Most people live up north, hole appears down south etc. etc.) and in truth they think that the hole may always have been there and may always have been varying in size but it was just that they didn't have the technology to measure it until recently. Upon measuring it for a few years it appeared the hole was getting bigger so out jump the doom merchants and before you know it we have a global disaster of a scale never before seen by man and it was your and my fault. In truth it might have been like that since the dawn of time. Sometimes things change without man being at all involved and sometimes we have no control over it even if we can work out exactly what causes it. Amazing the parallels.

We are - that is what global warming is.

The Earth follows a pattern with Ice ages, and it is thought that is "warms up" before one begins. We are following that pattern at the moment, and it's got sod all to do with greenhouse gasses etc.

When people say that we are affecting the climate too much, do they not realise that all the last ice age was caused entirely by this natural behaviour?

Unless the dinosaurs were all driving around in STI's and the government of the day didn't impose a CO2 tax to save us all from a horrible end

So the sea level may rise - it's been doing that for rather a while I think. See England being joined to mainland Europe a few years back......

Exactly! Climate change is a far better band-wagon to get on; so acid rain has fallen by the wayside, much like white dog ****.....

Acid rain was practically cured when the UK and European coal industries were decimated in the 70s & 80s.
Power stations switched to gas/nuclear or if coal burning then they bought low sulphur supplies and had acid scubbers fitted.
