Default Buying a minibus - Do i need a PSV license

I'm thinking of buying a minibus. now before i go ahead with this - someone told me if i use it for hire or reward (i.e. charging as a taxi) i would need my PSV license as i have only had my car license since 1997.

I want to buy a 15-16 seater and start doing trips and airport runs - that sort of thing.

First of all Do i need a license and if so where would i get training to get my PSV license. i've looked but remain a little confused (not hard i know)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

P.s. any other advice on minibuses would be greatly appreciated

You need a cat D1 to drive one e.g. a 17 seater LDV van. But for reward I don't know, quite possibly a PSV.

The dvla might be able to help?

Chief - have a look at the back of your licence with the categories you can drive. It may be listed there, I know that post 1999 the D1 and D1E were taken off the licences - it may have been earlier.

Yes you do. Assuming that you passed you car test before 1997 then you can drive a Group D1 minibus (up to 17 seats) for SDP use. If you want to drive a vehicle with more than 9 seats for 'hire & reward' then youll need a Group D (PCV) licence.

Group D training isnt that easy to find though. Bus companies train and then examine (!) their own candidates so commercial 'PCV' training is a lot harder to find than Group C (LGV) training.

D1 entitlement wouldnt have helped you there anyway. For 'hire & reward' you need D entitlement. For less than 9 seats youll need to be a private hire taxi I assume.

Group D is a bus licence; so you need to pass a bus test.

Most buses have automatic transmission too which'll rule out a manual minibus. If you pass an automatic bus test but you have a manual HGV licence already then itll upgrade the bus entitlement to manual too.

Chief,

At present you can only drive vehicles with up to 7 seats for SDP use only.

If you want to drive vehicles with 8-16 seats (minibuses) you need to sit a D1 test, which your local DSA should be able to help you with. With D1 you can only drive up to 16 seaters for SDP use.

If you want to drive ANY kind of vehicle for hire or reward (taxi) then you'll need to sit a taxi test and get licenced by your local council.

To drive a vehicle with more than 16 seats you need a PCV licence which is what bus drivers have.

As Talisman says, plus you'll more than likely need an operators license although this depends on your local council.

For nine or more seats you need Group D entitlement (PCV).

To drive a minibus which has nine or more passenger seats for hire or reward you will normally need passenger carrying vehicle entitlement (PCV). To obtain this you must meet higher medical standards and take a further driving test. However, if you drive a minibus for an organisation under the minibus or community bus permit scheme you will not need to have the higher PCV entitlements.

Youre mistaken Chief; thats a community exception. You cant drive a minibus unless you pass a Group D1 test at the least.
