Thumbs down LCD - Plasma - £1500+ What a Disappointment

Just been out today to finally buy myself a 37"-42" LCD or Plasma Digital TV - up to £2000 filling my pockets and a 12 year old 29" SONY CRT TV in the doldrums at home.

What an utter pile of ****e there is out there!!

Oh, yes, the HD displays are fantastic with a HD feed ....... but, ask the shop to switch to Digital TV and its total pants!! My old SONY blows them into the weeds in terms ot Picture Quality!! Yes, thats a 12 year old Trinitron!!!

Analogue TV is even worse!!

Saw the horse racing on the screen - you couldn't see the horses legs!!! Just a pixelated blur!!!

And they want £1500+ for these crappy pieces of tat!!

Now, I know that lots on here sing their praises .... plenty have spent £1000's .... but they are ****E!!

When freeview starts transmitting in HD - THEN - it may be the time to buy .... but, until then, I am not so sure at all!!

VERY disappointed!!

I agree Pete.

I shelled out for a Samsung 26" HD LCD for the bedroom. The built in freeview (odd decent channel btw) is ok and gives a decent picture but the tv channels for whatever reason aren't the best.

My Thompson in the sitting room generates a far better picture and sound. Was contemplating swapping this at some point but the experience has left me somewhat disappointed.

Put the money in the bank me thinks. If you're happy stick with what you've got.

Spending such a small amount on a plasma will always get you a poor picture....look at some of the dearer models

Bugger me! I agree with Mr. Lewis!

I've been into my hi-fi and home cinema for years, and plasma/lcd is NOT THE WAY FORWARD.

I'm waiting for the next generation, and I'll pick up a crappy plasma/lcd for peanuts and put it in the garage

**** me, lewis you dont actually read posts do you....

ive been saying for months that current lcd sets look poo on terrestrial, and pixelate somthing chronic, the only time they look good is on a hd feed.

plasma looks good on a normal feed, but it needs a good signal going in. even sky normal cant deliver that, blame all the non essential interacctive crap pinching bandwith

save your money untill after chrimbo, and grab somthing in the sales

alternitivley, check out novatech.co.uk, they do some reasonable lcd sets at reasonable prices

Ok, I hear what you are saying ........ but why should I spend £4000 on a panel to 'just about' come close to what my 12 Year Old SONY Trinitron (value now £50?) can deliver day after day?????

I am genuinely pissed off - I awoke this morning and cleared the area the TV would sit - I heaved the Sony TV onto the floor ready for the tip ...... I was REALLY up for it!!

Tried it .... TH-37PX60-B-PED .... £1076 in Dixons

Good write up, good connections, highly rated - and on a HD feed it was FANTASTIC!! I had my money out .......

BUT, feed in an Analogue signal and its utter crap!! Digital Signal and its slightly less crap but crap all the same ......... nowhere near the picture quality of my old SONY CRT!! Not a patch on it!

The 600 look slightly better - BUT, the horses legs on the racing were just a pixelated blur on even the most expensive!!

We are getting hoodwinked by the 'promise' of HD signals in the future ..... everyone is getting conned!!! (well not everyone - but the gullible are quite clearly!)

If it was less than £3500 then save your breath - my £50 SONY CRT pisses it!! And thats a FACT!!

I've also been looking at this whole thing, and as an agreemetnt with PS, I haven't upgraded. yet. LCD/plasma (IMHO) is sh1te. VERY disappointed, and I work in the media-related industries, where we use THE latest technology (at a price )

The only thing that semi-impressed me was by Samsung - a CRT-based HDTV with almost flatscreen footprint. Circa £500.....

Nothing still come close to a domestic CRT. If you spend £xxxx on it, fair play to you, but IMHO, you've got more money than sense

I have been praying for my SONY CRT to die ...... so, I could justify the change over.

It hasn't and I am GLAD!!

The alternatives are absolute rubbish ...... shocked!!

This is a shortcoming of low-bandwidth DVB TV Pete; rather than a shortcoming of the television sets themselves. Your £2000 will buy you an excellent 40" V model Sony Bravia which is as good as it gets (the S is cheaper but inferior). The bigger the screen the more apparent the macro blocks and artifacts will become though.

Thats why a 37" appeals ...........

Will the DVB Bandwidth increase as the Analogus signals are turned off??

Thats 2012 here in the South

How much was your PIONEER and what model?

I looked at a number of PIONEERs .... all I can say is that your TRINITON must be shagged if so easily beaten.

However, I will take your advice and go see your PIONEER tomorrow - let me know the model number?

Cheers

What is SED ?

I ve been watchin this thread with interest as im also seriously considering buying a LCD tv, at least a 37", I currently have a 4 year old Sony Trinaton 32" and must admit the picture quality is extremly good, better than a lot of LCDs, plasmas out there when they are run on analog/digital.

If you go out to buy be prepared for a shock - ignore the HD fantastic feeds which are amazing ................... get the signal on them that you will actually be watching at home and, if you use your head rather than your heart, you will be annoyed and disappointed!!

OUt of interest Pete, where the regular signals you were looking at in high street stores?

The reason I ask is that many high street stores have very poor/split signals, thus a rubbish picture.

I'm still of the opinion that it's all sh1te compared to CRT, as I've "ahem" borrowed one from work for the weekend.

I think Dell have one of the decent ones out currently, you should be able to pick a 37" one up for around £1000 probably the lesser of the evils IMO.

Pete, Get a Pioneer PDP-5000EX, Superb picture and they are so cheap, you could have one for each room!!!

On one days salary (minimum wage, BTW )I could buy lorry load. But I'm saving up for my own private island.

Sony have a new W Series range out in October, a true affordable full 1080p HD LCD in 40" & 46".

It's featured in What Hifi and managed 5/5 in everything, and they said it was good with freeview!

Looking at around £2k for the 40" but will no doubt be found for £1500ish within a few weeks/months.
