Default British Gas Help

Just found out this morning, that our Secretary has been paying via direct debit "£118 A MONTH" for her gas for the past 2 years.
She only has Gas to her central heating system, as the cooker is all electric.

She has payed for a new boiler, as she hoped this would help, but they have just informed her that it has now gone up to £150 per month (even through the Summer months)

I have suggested she either has a Gas leak, or next door is steeling it (Italians live next door). She has spoken to some Monkey at British gas, who has said there is nothing they can do, and to see how it goes over the next few months

Does anybody know the association that you can complain to regarding your fuel bills? and do you have the number.

She's feeling pretty p1ssed off this morning, as everybody in here has said she has been mad paying £118 per month for the last 2 years.

She needs this sorted, so if anyone has the name and number of who to complain to, it would be much appreciated. She needs cheering up !!

Is she tracking the meter readings herself? Check they have this right, we had our meter changed some time back and because it went back to zero their system couldn't handle it so they kept estimating our bills!

Track the meter readings over a couple of weeks and then using the rates on the bill work out what she is actually using. If that's correct some investigation may be required, calling Transco with regard to a suspected leak may help?

Question

Could she turn her boiler to "off" so it wasn't burning, then check the meter to see if gas is still being used?

As she is paying a set monthly fee her bills must indicate and actual usage against the accrual, check if the readings are estimated.

how big is the house ?

There was a case recently along these lines:

Customer was billed in cubic metres of gas used. Meter was read assuming that the figures were hundreds of cubic feet, which were then converted on the bill. However, the meter was actually measuring in cubic metres. The result was that the customer was being overbilled by a factor of 2.8.

Sounds like if the meter is recording the correct numbers then she may have a meter problem.

No. It is deffo per month. Direct Debit every month. This has gone on for 2 years. Why she didn't question it before I don't know I'd have complained and refused to pay after the first bill.

That's women for you I suppose.

I have had a similair thing happen to me.

When we moved into our 4 bed house with gas central heating and gas cooker we were charged approx £80 per month. They came and took a reading and duly increased the payments to cover winter etc saying it should all level out once we came back around to summer.

I was not happy but thought no probs benefit of the doubt etc.

I got a corgi registered plumber to check for gas leaks, service the boiler, replace the room stat etc etc. Total cost about £120.

So i continued paying BG until the next summer and then gave them a new meter reading and hey presto I was in serious credit , they told me that they would use this amount as a credit to pay coming bills .

My response was that they would not and would issue a cheque for the credit balance and also now re-calculate my monthly direct debit based on gas consumption over the past ten months - which they did.

I now pay about £40 per month and generally that seems aout right. Having said that the old boiler has been replaced with a cat A greenstar worcester bosch 30cdi condensing boiler which is more efficient than an efficent thing .

My advice is get a corgi registered gas service specalist to check things from the meter to all appliances for leaks, faults etc. If everything is ok ask the fitter for a report stating condition etc and then get the boxing gloves on with BG - she must be mad paying that much per month.

Regards

GB

I was only paying £25 a month and over 18 months I have gained a £500 bill!! I am now paying £116 a month to clear the arrears so it should go down to about £40 a month in 5 months time. No way should she be paying that much every month.

I have my boiler on constantly for heating, the central heating i on all the time and I have a gas cooker.

If she has no luck complaining to British Gas, her first port of call is Energywatch (who are as good as useless), if still not happy then go to Ofgen.
