I think they should make The Hobbit, sooner rather than later

Then they can backtrack further and make The Silmarillion

Well, that's how the Lord of the Rings ends. Summat like this was being discussed in the hutch earlier. Something about the Story of Jesus having such a **** ending.

It could have carried on for longer (LOTR) but the books are long enough as it is (so are the films)

Wasn't much more to say really once the ring was in the fire That was the quest.

Was still a shame when I finished reading it though, I really enjoyed the films and the books Left me still wanting to read more

Sooooooooooo............

Have you read:

"The Hobbit", JRR Tolkien?
"The Chronicles of Thomas covenant, the Unbeliever, I>VI", Stephen R Donaldson?
"The Belgariad, Books 1>6" and "The Malloreran, Books 1>6", David Eddings,
"The Wheel of Time, series (ten books)", Robert Jordan?

If it were my choice, I'd go for "The Hobbit" first, then move onto "Pawn Of Prophecy", book one of "The Belgariad". A truly excellent series with many echos of LOTR, although perhaps too many characters, (rather like LOTR).

I'd leave Stephen Donaldson until last, his "hero" is a real wimp, I lost count
of the number of times I wanted to smack him!

You can always have a crack at the Terry Brooks Shannara series although they are a little too close to Tolkein at times.

I believe they have secured the rights to the Hobbit, but Jackson has just started the wheels in motion to make The Dam Busters, so we will have to wait 2 or 3 years if he decides to make it.

On the radio the other day they said that Jackson wants to make the hobbit, Ian Mckellan said no one is to play Gandalf except him, but Peter said he isn't going to wait for the rights and legal battles, he will continue making other films until the rights are available and then he *may* make the film

I really don't think there could be another LOTR just because of the boat hehe, the boat was sailing off for them to die great story that would be.

They don't have the rights to make The Hobbit so that will not be happening, shame really.

Yup thats how I understood it aswell, the hobbit IMO was much better than LOTRs so really looking forward to its release.

Dear Loyal LOTR Fans,

Thank you very, very much for the incredible outpouring of support for LOTR, and your eagerness to see THE HOBBIT.

We, at New Line, are most touched and appreciative of your compliments, and your passion for the remarkable work of the author, the filmmakers, talent, and craftspeople.

We are also, as you, most anxious to see THE HOBBIT realized.

Please be assured that there is, in no way, a crass argument with MGM or anyone over money or rights. In fact, no discussions about any settlement of our respective claims, has been commenced. When, and if, such discussions ensue, be assured that we intend to be equitable and appropriate to the spirit of Tolkien, and THE HOBBIT. We will, as much as possible, "do the right thing", respecting the incredible loyalty and appreciation of the worldwide fans. We hope that MGM will feel the same.

However, we also wish to have the film overseen by the best possible mentors - and, for us, if possible, that means Peter and Fran. They are totally occupied by KING KONG now and, we believe, will be the next twenty-four months, or so.

So our efforts will take time to realize.

Sincerely,

Robert Shaye
Co-CEO/Co-Chairman
New Line Cinema

MGM still havent responded, and they own the rights too

Yes, I read The Hobbit before LOTR

I looked at some of the unfinished tales books, but not got any of them yet. I would like to get the history of middle earth too, but theye're not cheap as there's so many of them I will get around to reading them eventually
