I thought about it when I was skint at 17, but think there are better ways to make a lot more money! You are only allowed to claim "expenses" although they are inflated, it's pretty crap money TBH, but then you are just lying around sneezing.....

I did it twice about 5 year ago. They were okay, had to stay over for 2 days each time take a few paracetamol that they were testing and have my blood drained every few hours. It was very boring but at the time I was desperate for some cash. A couple of people passed out during the tests just because of the needles I think.
They paid me £500 each time although I would have liked to do some of the bigger tests that paid about £4000. In a way I am glad that I didnt because while I was there they were testing some drugs on a group and the first two people they injected had blackouts and major spazms so they stopped the experiment and sent them all home with pay.
It's a bit risky but if needs must......

I've taken part in some but not as a volunteer! (I developed some software to manage phase 1 clinical trials.)
Some trials are very low risk but they are obliged to do them. For example, when they give a drug in a new form, e.g. in a drink instead of a pill.

I nearly did one for a Malaria drug trial in Oxford, they were offering £2500 for 4 days work. The downside was that they had to deliberately give you Malaria. I was going to do it but they filled the last space while I was thinking about it.
